[QUESTION] Iggy

Damn it, this has been in my head for a while and I never bothered to ask :\ Anyway, question that's been floating in the old noggin since last New Year in '08.

In the Christmas Special for '07, France mumbles 'Iggy' over and over in the final segment. Now, around the time after the whole 'Iggy' thing I usually read fanfics where America calls England 'Iggy' and as you can predict France 'Angleterre' (this started out as a fanon amongst western fans though I'm not sure if France ever called him such in the comics). Here's my question:

Has America ever called England 'Iggy'? 'Cause I feel as though in the western fandom Iggy's become America's official nickname for England. I ask this because if America's never called him such, shouldn't it be France's nickname for him?

Please don't think I'm starting a fandom war here, I have nothing against any pairing, I just wanted to be clarified.

Actually it is everyone's nickname for England, both western and Japanese fandom. The nick Iggy comes from how England/Britain is said in Japanese (i-gi-ri-su).

I don't recall any other character using Iggy to refer to England. It would be odd if America called him Iggy in canon since it's endearing (and mocking if you're France).

I'm also sure France never calls him Angleterre in the original strips. Translators/fans probably felt it was a very France thing to do so and it stuck for a while.

Oh, I understand where the term 'Iggy' came from. I'm talking about the series though, I'm asking if America ever called him so in the series, I'm well aware that fans call England 'Iggy' and mostly affectionately c:

As for France, as I've mentioned he did call him by the nickname 'Iggy' (weather he started it or not, I'm not sure), I just want to know if America did as well. I see it a lot in fanfiction so I just wanted to make sure c:

More than likely Himaruya himself started the whole thing. You know how he names the file names of pictures he puts up, well he might have labelled an England pic with Iggy shorthand.

And then there is Igiko.

Yes Himaruya started it, and France IS the only person who once called him by that nickname in this series.

When did France call him "Iggy"? I don't remember anything like that from the manga... (then again my memory can't be trusted)

As far as I know no character ever called him that in canon. I don't think I've ever seen America, France or anyone else call him "Iggy" in Japanese fanfics either.

Well, there are times in western fanfics where America's, most commonly, calls him Iggy. As for France, he called him so in the Christmas Special made in '07--it was posted here back at '08.

Yes, I know it's common over here, I've been also wondering about it, considering nobody ever calls him that.

I checked the Christmas special (the Japanese, I don't have time to look up the translation) but the way France uses it there it's not really a nickname... at least not anything I'd translate as "Iggy." It's just "gaah... England... England..."

Nah, I'm quite sure he's referring to England (as he's been looking for him previously), it's just that to me it's more like a half-mad muttering than a nickname. ^^;; I guess this is easier to do in Japanese, if it was in English he probably would've simply said "England, England..." If it was an actual nickname IMO France would use it elsewhere, if only to annoy England (he totally would xD).

Himaruya (and consequently fans) calling him "Iggy" is of course a different matter.

Ah, is it like what phyuu said? I think what he/she meant was that Himaruya started it through having France saying it or stating it in the comments c:

Er, I interpreted it as: 1) Himaruya is the one who the nickname (so it doesn't originate in fandom) and 2) France is the only one who used it in canon, though as I said above, I don't think I quite agree. (Maybe we could ask Himaruya. :D)

In any case, nobody says "Igi" in any of the other strips, France included, so to me this firmly puts any character calling England "Iggy" firmly into either fanon or "not canon but people do it anyway because it originates from Himaruya" like the characters' human names.

See? He did used () イギイギ didn't him? If you suspected the above-mentioned Iggy- Iggy- () part, then you cannot explain this one.

Hm, I never noticed it in the second panel... my mind automatically supplied イギリス. orz

In any case, there's still the fact that neither he nor anyone else ever uses it in any other strip, episode or CD track (as far as I can recall, anyway), so for me this is the same category as America being called "Alfred" in one strip when he's doing a commercial. (That is, not a definitive proof that this is his nickname for England... especially since he's being seriously disturbed here. Oh France, why are you so pathetically awesome? or is it vice versa?)

But by letting the character said it out loud, Himaruya himself proved the nickname to be kind of workable. And only one scene England being called Iggy can be found in this whole series, so whatever you prefer, France was the only person once did it it's true.
(Proof or not was beyond the question, I suppose.)

Of course I'm not saying fans can't speculate, it's just that it's not what I'd consider official and thus it's not something I feel "should" be exclusive-use to one particular character. (Or any character at all, actually that's what I'd prefer... I'm not very fond of it for some reason.) If he used it more and in a more obvious context, it'd be a different matter, but he doesn't.

It's just an evidence to answer the question, that America never called England by his nickname and France did.
And of course he didn't tend to mean that () much, we all know.

Yeah, America never called him that, that much is obvious. I really wonder why it's so widespread in the western fandom, because (afaik, anyway, apparently my mind is apparently not to be trusted today) there's zero canon proof for it. It's like the "father/son" thing, which apparently many people consider canon regardless of canon actually saying something completely different.

Maybe someone confused it with "いぎりちゅ"...

Strangely I felt rather fluent when I saw America or anyone else called him Iggy, it's a cute and loving nickname, familiar still, for some reason it seems just right. But I hope they did not confused it with igirichu, which is far from Iggy, adult should not using a tone like that.
And yeah the father/son thing is unprovoked. I didn't even think of it before I came to the comm. Just where it comes from?!

I don't know, it's cute and all, and I don't mind people using it outside of fanfic, but in fanfic it's a bit... I don't know, kind of out of left field to me, or something. It's a bit weird in English. (To me it'd be more natural in Japanese since it's directly derived from "igirisu".) And being a lifelong fan of Iggy Pop and David Bowie doesn't help. ^^;; (Then again, England as Ziggy Stardust (http://autoanything.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/ziggy-stardust-david-bowie.jpg) is a pretty amusing mental image. :D and that's one of his less extravagant costumes...) I'm not saying people should stop using it in fanfic, though, but I guess it just doesn't have the intended effect on me. ^^;;

As for the father/son thing, yeah, it never occurred to me either. IMO they have a pretty good older brother/younger brother dynamics. But I suppose other people feel that taking care of a child = parent... Ah well. /pet peeve
