Title: Heine called the Hambachian festival Germany's "Last Appointment with the Goddess of Liberty". I've been wanting to draw revolutionarystudent!Ludwig for a long time. :) Might FraGerPol fic this at some point, but the idea is difficult and slippery.

I tried thinking about it like that at first, actually. But then, the Hambachian movement was so open and free that I just couldn't see it.

The German student revolution was in the same time frame, so Les Mis is the accurate association. :D There were actually French students preparing for revolution present at Hambach, and they spoke to the crowd there and tried to incite armed revolt (that ... didn't really work out, unfortunately).

XD Glad you like it. I'd usually draw him quite differently (especially the eyes, actually :P ), but ... Hambach!Germany was very un-German. xD

He was. In 183x, if you were for "Germany", you were a whole slew of other really cool things. Demands brought forth at Hambach ranged from lowered taxes over freedom of speech and the press all the way to emancipation of the Jews and peaceful coexistence with all free peoples of Europe (especially France and Poland).

Unfortunately, the local governments didn't like the idea of Germany ... and had military and police on their side.
