[fanfic - well, sort of, and there's some meta too] On a Small God
Title: On a Small God
Author/Artist: Jane
Character(s) or Pairing(s): America (Alfred F. Jones)
Rating: G
Warnings: Uh... it's poetry.
Summary: Seven lines on the embodiment of slightly over two hundred years of ideals and dreams.
He's that nice guy you meet
on your way back from the corner
store. That one time,
when you'd dropped your wallet,
he picked it up. He smiled.
You walked together,
but never got his name.
***
And now, a note:
I had America in mind when I wrote this (lol, patriotic sort-of Air Force brat here, not gonna lie), but... the friend I first showed it to pointed out that in some way this is just what the countries probably are, to their people. They're that "cool guy who happens to be at the bar at the same time as you. And even if he tells you his name, you just...kind of forget it for no reason." But you'd be okay with that, as I followed up, "Because he was nice, and he listened, and if things were wrong because of society and not you - and even if they were wrong because of you - his eyes filled with sympathetic tears at the right points, and he laughed at the right points too."
...we then agreed that Alfred totally drives a kickass motorcycle, and not just because Easy Rider = America to most of Japan. Can't be too serious about this for too long, after all. And do we have a tag for theorizing about what the countries are? I used the term "small god" because it felt right, hopefully nobody takes offense....

Anyway, as an abstract 'country'... America is the everyman, to me. He's the guy traveling west on his motorcycle with nothing but the necessities strapped on board. He's the one who's not afraid to get dirty, and you can tell it from his clothes: a white shirt, oil-stained jeans, dust-flecked jacket, and working boots. And his drink of choice at every gas station would be Coke, naturally.
And he probably has one of those 'How's My Driving?' bumper stickers on...you know, some car of his.

As to my image of him, well... you saw the poem. Hell, you said the words that inspired it. I agree wholeheartedly.
