[FANFIC] A DIFFERENT SORT OF CONQUEST

Uh, howdy everyone. I've been lurking around this community for a month or two, and I'm de-lurking with the first fanfic I have ever written for any fandom at all. w00t.

So, as you can tell from my icon, I'm a MASSIVE fan of classic rock and music in general. I was struck by an idea for a story that combined Hetalia and an incredibly important moment in 20th century music. I'm sure you'll figure out what it is by like, the first paragraph.

Title: A Different Sort of Conquest
Author/Artist: Yours truly, [livejournal.com profile] fishnet_hamster
Character(s) or Pairing(s): America and England
Rating: So G it hurts.
Warnings: None
Summary: England challenges America at his own game, with unexpected results.

America was humming again.

It wasn’t a new habit, this humming of his. For the past decade or so, America had taken to tapping his foot and humming or singing along to whatever bouncy, catchy little tune was in his head. It was contagious, and the other countries found themselves humming along, even England. He tried his best, but England just couldn’t resist the tunes that America came up with.

England sat at a table in front of a tall stack of very important-looking documents. Across the table was America, quietly singing about surfing and a girl named Peggy Sue. America had an equally imposing stack of papers before him, but had given up on it a while ago. England furrowed his brow in concentration, trying to maintain a façade of responsibility, but the tap of his boot against the table leg gave him away. America blinked, pausing in mid-song.

“I’m not distracting you, am I, England?”
England refused to admit defeat, but secretly wanted to hear more. “No, of course not.” he scoffed. “Carry on with your Rocky Roll.”
America laughed. “It’s Rock n’ Roll, England!”
“I believe you meant and. I certainly taught you to enunciate.”
“Aw, England.” America sighed in exasperation. “You’ll never get it.”

Is that so? England thought to himself. He took that statement as a challenge. Trying to remain inconspicuous, he quietly began tapping his pen against the table, searching for a beat. Once he had one he liked, he hummed along, trying to sound like something America would like. He didn’t think he sounded half bad, really.

America was no longer sitting, having taken to twisting his hips in a new dance that he planned to show off to the rest of the nations. He pivoted in surprise when he heard England humming. “Whoa, England. You okay over there? You sound like you’re going to be sick.”

England frowned. This Rocky Roll is harder than I assumed it would be, he thought to himself. He pretended to scribble on a document while America sang to himself an indiscernible ramble about a man named Louie. England listened hard to the melody, since he sure couldn’t catch the lyrics. He thought about pleasant things to sing about, like love. He thought about phrases that rhymed, like “I think you’ll understand” and “I want to hold your hand”. Before he knew it, he had a catchy little melody of his own that he quite enjoyed. Even if America wasn’t keen on it, England was truly impressed with himself.

He certainly wasn’t expecting the loud gasp that he heard from across the table.

“What…what was that?” America asked, almost too stunned to speak.

England shrugged, his lips forming a perfectly smug smirk. “Just a song I made up. Why? Did you like it?”

America jumped so far across the table that his nose nearly touched England’s. “That was amazing! Can you do it again?”

England mentally threw some more words together that rhymed. This time he came up with “you”, “do” and “true”. It wasn’t much, but if he threw in something about love, he could make it work. He put the words to a simple melody, sang it as best as he could and waited for America’s reaction.

He screamed. Alfred bloody screamed.

“Oh, England! You’re so good at Rock n’ Roll! Please do more! I love it! Why didn’t you ever tell me how hip you are? I…I can’t…AAAAAAAH!!!” America wrapped his arms around England and hugged the man almost as firmly as he used to when he was a child.

England blinked. He didn’t know he could still have this amount of power over America. Granted, it was entirely different than the authority he once held over the young nation, but it was still incredibly rejuvenating.

For some reason, it made England feel like growing his hair out, and maybe investing in a new suit.

END.

And that was The British Invasion in a Hetalia-shaped nutshell, folks. In 1964, England became the epicenter of popular music. At the forefront of the so-called invasion were The Beatles, followed by dozens of other bands such as The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Who, The Hollies, The Zombies and The Byrds. Alfred was fascinated by what Arthur was wearing and listening to. Arthur really enjoyed the attention. Here's some informative sites about it, if you're interested:

I'm convinced that it was a combination of the bowl-cut and British accent, not the music.

Yay~

British Invasion, yes! xD Their little jabs at each other were very true to character, and Alfred's reaction was totally adorable. Hehee, I had this big stupid grin on my face when I got to the ending. This was a fun read!
