Words from the artist:
Yao couldn't smile during the war, that was what I was feeling making this comic. (Though it ended up maltreating Russia...OTZ)
Why couldn't smile even though when it was their honeymoon?XD
Because these two they could stick together through thick and thin, but couldn't share the joys *beated*. From the point of view of western countries, Yao was very weak in the WWII because of the lack of technology. In that situation, without technology, nor good organization nor formal training, lots of the people of Yao were just fighting desperatly leaning on great persistance and strong willpower, and maintained to the end.
Because of that kind of past, even in nowadays when Yao is getting powerful, the people of Yao are still holding that kind of nisus of trying to stand up. Some western people, whose countries had never been ridden roughshod over, often feel confused about why are those Chinese people trying so hard,  holding their breath, to prove themselves .. XD yeah, that's kind of difficult to understand for them.

Words from the translator:
Well... I don't know if you know the real history between China and Soviet Russia, the relationship didn't maintain as sweet as it used to be in the WWII and the first years of the foundation of PRC. The thing was very complicated so I'm not going to explain it here... maybe it's just like the artist said, they couln't share the joys. The soviet Ivan was strong, and he did protect Yao, but he also wanted him to be his, to be part of USSR, considering Yao was very weak. And that was not Yao wanted. He couldn't smile because he had too much pain, he used to be the most powerful in the world, yet he couldn't protect himself and his families in WWII, and even his closest ally underestimated him. And Yao definitely didn't want to belong to anyone.

I don't think Yao hated the soivet Ivan, he just had to protect himself first and he hated the inferior feeling in front of the soviet(and the world). But, well, still it's true that Soviet Russia was the only few victims China has ever played trick on. So Later when he meets the no-longer-soviet Russian, he can smile because he is showing to the world that he's strong indeed and now he's equal to many other countries.

Well, it's just what I feel from the comic(I guess I have thought it too darkly...OTL). The artist didn't make it for the western readers so she didn't explained so much...

GJ! Kanmuri is one of my favourite artist. Thanks for your translating!
Yao does not hate Ivan, and his attitude towards Ivan is very complicated. Actually when Soviet break up, many Chinese was shocked ,unbelievable and even sad. Have you ever read the book called 苏联祭。http://vip.book.sina.com.cn/book/chapter_40359_24068.html
