[Fanart] The Sacking of Prague
or, "Don't be too hard on Austria!"
First post, and I am excited...
Fanart
Title: The Sacking of Prague
Artist: seatapp
Characters: Finland, Austria, Estonia, Latvia, HRE, France, and Sweden
Rating: PG
Warnings: Joking about some real history that wasn't so funny when it happened.
Sharp and pointy things.
A bit history heavy.
Summary: Prague was thoroughly sacked in July 1648. Sort of a sequel to "Austria the gold-digger".
A while ago somebody posted some fanart with Austria as a gold-digger who wasted all Spain's money [1, 2]. I wanted to draw a sequel to them because they were funny. :-) Just pointing out that Austria didn't exactly use all the money himself... he had some (most willing, most unwanted) help spreading it all over Europe.

Edit. The picture didn't seem quite right, so I tried resizing it.
-The rest is just history notes-
In summer 1648, France, Sweden, and Holy Roman Empire were finishing the negotiations of a peace treaty to end the Thirty Year's War. Some of Sweden's minions realized that no more war -> no more raiding -> no more money! and decided to take the chance as long as there was time.
Prague, then Austrian territory, was a wealthy city and had been mostly spared from the worst calamities. On the night of 15th of July 1648, a small army took Prague's Malá Strana district (where the richest people lived) by surprise, plundered it, packed down all the valuable stuff they found and sent to Stockholm.
This included tons and tons of gold and silver but also books, art, and basically everything of any value.
They even stole a living lion.
It was probably more riches than any of them had ever seen in one place before, and much help paying the costs of the war on Sweden's side.
That was a mean trick. But I didn't know the money came from Spain. :-)
