[FANFIC] Everybody's Got the Right
Title: Everybody's Got the Right
Author: Artemischan
Character(s): America, a few of his bosses
Rating: PG for death
Warnings: Death, wondering about conspiracy theories.
Summary: A trip through Dallas. Memories.
November 22, 1963
He sat in the convertible behind his boss, smiling at the cheering crowds. America liked Dallas, as a city. He also liked his current boss, and his boss's plans. Of course, the fact that the boss also had a young little boy didn't hurt either.
The crack of the gunshots was sudden, unexpected, though he automatically ducked out of the way. The bullet zinged past his head, just missing him. The next thing he knew, people were creaming and the car was speeding off. Glancing into the front seat, America blanched at the sight before him.
Oh no, ran his thoughts, not again. It was as sudden and brutal this time as it had been the first time he'd lost a boss to a bullet. Both times, he was close enough to see the damage, close enough to want to retch from the sight and smell. And, just like the first time, he knew there was no recovering from this one.
Later, years later, America would hear about all of the similarities, the spurious connections between those two assassinations. It would bother him, a little bit, that people would trivialize their murders so, but what would bother him most was a difference between the two days. That first time, he got a chance to see the man who held the gun to his boss's head and pulled the trigger; this time, he could only watch the man they accused of pulling the trigger be assassinated himself. And that, more than anything, made him wonder at their claims.
For being such a progressive country, he had his share of problems. America's mind wandered over the different bosses he'd lost over the years. Harrison (though that was the man's own fault), Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley...people only ever remembered Lincoln's sudden death, and now Kennedy's. American knew he was an awesome country, a good place to live - he had to be, otherwise why would all of those people keep coming over from Europe and Asia - and so it hurt him, deeply, when things like this happened.
"Still," he mused aloud, watching the peaceful protesters gathering outside of the Lincoln Memorial, "free country means that you've got a choice. Everyone's entitled to a bit of sunshine." Smiling wistfully, with fond remembrance, at the large seated statue, America left the cool confines of the building, heading towards the Tidal Basin in the late morning sun.

John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. They say that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, but the people who believe that also believe the Magic Bullet Theory put forth by my favorite Senator.I can't wait until we vote him out of office. John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865.
Now, you might not be able to tell, but this was heavily inspired by the Stephen Sondheim musical Assassins. It's a wonderful show about the folks who both attempted and succeeded at killing U.S. Presidents. The title of the fic is from the opening and closing songs to the show, "Everybody's Got the Right". It was too good to pass up.
Thanks for reading my first foray into Hetalia.

Have you watched any of the shows that re-enact the shooting and show that one bullet really could have shot Kennedy as well as the guy in front of him (can't remember the name and too lazy to look it up). There was one on Discovery just last month.
While I can accept that maybe Oswald didn't act alone, but was in fact put up to it by someone; I will readily accept that he was the one whose shot killed Kennedy. That is not nearly enough evidence to show that he wasn't the one who did it.
Anyway, good fic regardless. I especially love the mention on Harrison's death being his own fault. ^_^

I haven't seen any of those show (and the fact that I don't get Discovery makes me sad). They sound interesting though.

And it's really -- gorgeously creepy to imagine America as the Balladeer...
