[Fanfic] Shapes and Sides

Title: Shapes and Sides
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] olynthus
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Norway, Iceland
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: Curious, Iceland asks Norway what is on the other side of the earth.

Iceland stood on the rock—a rock stabilised by the rest of the formation—and put his hand underneath his coat, watching it for a moment. His fingers were wrapped around a pebble. He put his hand out in front of him, imitating and trying to understand the sunset, as he saw it.

After a time, his mouth tightened, his focus shifting as his thoughts began to run on a slightly different course. A rock, yes, as the earth, slipping away and coming back up. Always...was it a gradual process, slipping away? Couldn't obviously happen all at once if there was a sunset, with the sun slipping away, not the earth.

So it had to be...?

He tossed the rock to the beach, where it didn't get very far. It slipped some, down an incline, finally settled in gravelly sand. In the morning, the surf would lap at it.

There was a hand on his shoulder.

Iceland's hand--a child's hand--went to his shoulder, where it found and wrapped around a larger hand. This other boy was taller than him, always had been taller than him, but had such nice hands, even if he did go to war in far away places. Places that weren't here.

“Where does the sun go to?” Iceland asked, his eyes set on the the horizon, where the light and colour were leaking out of the world. Obviously Norway would know—he knew about these kinds of things.

“To the other side.”

“Other side?”

“Of the world. We've turned.”

“Oh,” Iceland said, and tried to imagine the world turning, rolling. It was pretty easy, once he figured out the right shape.

He leaned his head into Norway's side and sighed, a sigh that turned into a yawn.

“Would you like to see it someday?”

Iceland considered it, imagined what the other side of the world would look like, closed his eyes. By now, the colour was gone and replaced by a silver-lined greyness. Of course there were some subtle swaths of light lavender, but they were too faint—too close to the grey—for his heavy eyes to discern.

And somewhere else, eyes were just beginning to see the colours from the grey.

“Yeah. It'd be nice to see it.”

Norway was quiet for a time. He was waiting for something, anything. A cue on what to do next.

“It'd be nice.” And Iceland tugged on Norway's tunic. “It's dark. You'll get cold. Let's go home.”

Norway nodded, and so they headed home, to Iceland's house, for the night.

*This is set in Viking!times. They are still young. Norway still doesn't "own" Iceland yet, but still comes to visit him from time to time.
*So, this is before the earth being spherical was...er, "common knowledge"? Though the Vikings probably knew that it wasn't, given that they could see the curvature of the earth.
