[Fanfic] Man's Best Friend

This is a self-indulgent, silly, and perhaps pointless fic. But it’s the first complete fanfic I’ve ever written and posted, so I hope that you enjoy it nonetheless!

Title: Man’s Best Friend
Author: aurussteelsword
Characters: Germany; brief appearance by North Italy
Rating: G
Word Count: 952
Warnings: None, really – Ludwig being affectionate? ^_^

Summary: A moment with the housemates that don’t drive Ludwig crazy.

Ludwig opened the morning newspaper, sitting rigidly at the small kitchen table and biting into half of a slice of toast, spread thinly with butter. The other half remained on a plate just next to where he rested his forearm, and a little in front of his mug of coffee (black, of course). One could hardly call his life peaceful—it had never really qualified as such in the first place, and it was even less so now, what with the war, and Italy, and all of the necessary planning and strategies and meetings, and Italy—but mornings were quiet, at least, when Feliciano was still in bed and Kiku hadn’t arrived for their daily exercises. It was as peaceful as Ludwig could reasonably expect. He sipped his coffee, read his newspaper, nibbled on his toast, kept one eye on the clock to make sure he didn’t let Feliciano oversleep.

He was skimming an article about an accident at some American munitions plant when he felt a warm, deliberate weight on his thigh.

“Good morning, Adicus,” Ludwig said, tilting the paper aside and scratching the dog behind one large, upright ear. Adicus blinked both eyes, his clever brows quirking slightly as Ludwig’s hand settled on the crown of his head, and did not move. His strong jaw pressed down against Ludwig’s leg, and the dog gave a hearty sigh.

“What is it?” Ludwig smiled faintly and opened the paper again, only to feel something wet and quite cold against his left forearm. “Greta—” The wolfish creature licked his elbow and sat, ears erect, blue eyes focused. “Good morning to both of you, then.”

He took another bite of toast. Both dogs followed his hand very closely with their eyes; Greta’s tail thumped once against the floor, and Adicus’s brows knitted.

“Is that so?” Ludwig said over his cup of coffee.

A breath of air against his back alerted him to the presence of his third furry housemate. He looked over his shoulder and nodded mildly. “Good morning, Blitz.”

Blitz sat primly, his long, gray tail vigorously sweeping the floor. All three watched as he finished the first half and picked up the second, and Adicus began to drool on Ludwig’s pant leg, looking up at the half-slice with deep, watery, brown eyes that reminded Ludwig all too much of someone else that he knew.

Ludwig scratched the bridge of Adicus’s long nose. Greta inched closer and set her jowl solidly on Ludwig’s other leg. Blitz circled the three of them and took his position next to Adicus.

“This is my breakfast,” Ludwig told them, raising one eyebrow.

Three sets of eyes blinked imploringly in return.

“Let me be, will you?”

Greta woofed softly. Ludwig tapped her nose.

“No.”

Brown, blue, and yellow eyes followed the path of the toast from plate to mouth and back again. Ludwig didn’t dare open his paper, lest the toast vanish the moment he was otherwise occupied. He ran his hand through Blitz’s thick, silver mane, and Adicus licked his wrist as it passed in front of his pointed nose.

“Good dog.”

Adicus lifted his head enough to grin widely, his tongue hanging from one side of his mouth.

“You still can’t have my toast.”

Adicus’s eyes mellowed, and his charcoaled brows furrowed mournfully.

“Yes, I’m certain. Besides, I’m almost finished.”

Ludwig swallowed the last of his coffee, finished the toast in two bites, and stood up to deposit his dishes in the sink. All three dogs pranced at his heels, jostling against Ludwig’s legs and each other, mouths open and paws clack-clacking on the floor, tails swaying, ears perked. They sat when he turned from the sink to face them, looking up obediently and grinning. Greta yawned mightily, her ears tilting back, and Blitz’s tail continued to swish against the floor. All three sprang to their feet when Ludwig reached for the unmarked tin on the counter, where he kept the dog biscuits (there seemed to be a good deal fewer than there should’ve been; he’d need to speak to Feliciano about the dangers of ruining his dogs’ feeding schedule).

Sit,” he ordered.

They sat.

Down.”

Greta and Adicus lay down obediently; Blitz only cocked his head and furrowed his brows.

“Blitz,” Ludwig said with a warning glance at the offender. Blitz sank to the floor and set his chin on his paws. “Good. Up.”

They stood. He handed a biscuit to each dog in turn, and the three of them chewed loudly. Ludwig pet each one, combing his fingers through bristly fur and scratching around ears and fierce jaws and sloping shoulders; Adicus licked his face exuberantly when he knelt to ruffle the big shepherd’s ears, smiling to himself and laughing under his breath. “Good dogs,” he said as the other two nuzzled close, playfully knocking each other out of the way.

The clock above the kitchen counter read 05:41, and the sunlight outside was strong and slowly losing the pinkish hue of early morning. It seemed about time for the latest trick he’d taught them. Knowing what was coming, the dogs hovered around his feet, watching him and waiting for their cue.

Go wake Italy,” he commanded.

The three dogs scrambled eagerly across the kitchen floor and rushed out of sight, jaws open and panting with excitement. Ludwig went back to the sink to rinse and dry the dishes, and in a moment, Feliciano’s sleep-heavy voice came echoing from the bedroom, full of surprise and dismay, and mixed with playful barks and howls.

Ludwig dried his mug and returned it to the cupboard as the dogs came stampeding back to him, a sleepy and stumbling Feliciano following behind. They rather enjoyed that trick.

This was adorable, much love to you <3 Its good to see Germany like that and not under so much stress. My dog is part Labrador so I can definitely feel sympathy towards Germany having the dogs watching him eat.
