Summary: 8 doodles and hopefully a little bit o' learnin'.


1896: The Kruger Telegram! Germany congratulates a Boer leader in South Africa on putting down some uppity British expatriates. Britain gets pissy. The Kaiser apologizes, but things are never quite the same again between the two.

1914: The Willy-Nicky Correspondence! Russia and Germany attempt to talk each other out of taking their escalating conflict any further before war breaks out. It doesn't end on a very positive note.

1917: The Zimmermann Telegram! Germany tries to convince Mexico to join him against America in exchange for help in recovering a few things lost in the Mexican-American War, such as Texas. America does not cotton to this one bit.

1942: The Riegner Telegram. A not-so-secret secret gets out. Certain people don't want to believe it. Not lulzy at all, I'm afraid.


....Aaaaand all the rest.

Etiquette! Traditional American table manners generally call for one to rest an unoccupied hand in your lap, while German custom calls for keeping both fork and knife in hand for just about the full duration of the meal. Switching from one habit to the other is kinda hard. D:

I've not read any actual news articles of the time, but God, I can imagine. This is why I'm so very glad Hetalia characters represent countries and not their leaders; you know there's always inner conflict there, even during those times when the people running the ship were making some Very Bad Judgment Calls.

(You know, I remember when we had to actually work to find handy sources for things on the internet. Nowadays every time I look up an historical event I have to wade through a page or two of Wkipedia or "copypasta'd from Wikipedia" results to find anything extra.)

I think it was just the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of people, so to speak. Plus the UK was already getting pretty touchy over perceived German one-upmanship as far as spheres of influence/colonies and industry were concerned. Germany's arguments about needing a bigger navy and Britain's response along the lines of "...We're an ISLAND, u gaiz" are pretty funny. (Can you tell we did WWI in my history class in Germany yet?)

There's probably some wonderful Terry Pratchett quote about the power of willful ignorance that would fit that Riegner situation depressingly well.

CLEARLY you're just a poorly-raised peasant and I for one will not be inviting you to any fancy German dinner parties in the near future. (Haha, NO. I actually grew up cutting my food in what I was later told was the "European" fashion, so maybe we both fail. XD;)

The British Freaking Empire felt one-upped by Germany in terms of influence/colonies? xD Now that's funny - I faintly remember something from school about Germany feeling greatly inferior to the UK, itself. That's why they randomly established some half-assed colonies somewhere in South Africa to feel all ~colonial empire-ish~ and stuff.
Maybe UK and Germany should have just sat down and drunk some tea together, and tell each other how awesome and powerful they think the other is, and they would have felt better and it would have saved everybody a lot of trouble...

Well, the German economy friggin' exploded between the late 1800s and early 1900s, so I believe the British perspective went something like "Oh look they're trying to be like us oh wow they are like us now OHSHIT WHERE DID ALL THAT STEEL COME FROM WHAT'RE WE GONNA DO." And what with imperialism being the order of the day, it was generally assumed by a lot of folks (including quite a few Germans) that the Fatherland was gonna want a nice little empire to go with all that shiny new industry. So, inferiority complex overcome with extreme prejudice? XD Yay Europe.

Apparently this "American" style of eating involves first cutting meat with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right (ie, the so-called "European" way of doing it), then putting your utensils down and switching so you eat with your fork in your right hand. When this was explained to me, I was like "um, no, that's LAME. :|" But I'm left-handed, so maybe some right-handed Americans still find it more convenient. Whatever.

(Bah, there's nothing wrong with being Texan! At least we've got an exciting enough history that we can be forced to learn about it for two or three separate years throughout our school lives. I ain't never heard of no thrilling Grade 6 North Dakota History unit. :|)

I agree there's a point at which canon has to kind of distance itself from the more delicate aspects of actual history. (And honestly, if the pic is offensive, I'll take it down.)

Texas sometimes remind me the brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Grande_do_Sul). The state began an conflict against the Empire of Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Brazil) called War of Tatters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Farrapos) (in portuguese: Guerra dos Farrapos), and that resulted in the declaration of independence for the province as a republican state, giving rise to the "Republic Rio-Grandense". But the republic only lasted ten years, going back to be part of the empire in 1845. =P
