Warnings: language, historical inaccuracies
Summary: On October 17th 1781 Cornwallis agreed to surrender unconditionally during the Siege of Yorktown, this surrender would eventually be the key needed for the American victory during the Revolutionary War. However the terms of the surrender require Arthur to present his sword to Alfred, an act he refuses be apart of...
It was a nerve racking moment that only escalated with the sound of the drums. A few of the soldiers grumbled and laughed mocking the gesture, “British can't do anything without makin' some kind of spectacle, aye Alfred?”
The tall blue eyed man said nothing to his comrade as he stared intently on the men in red uniform coming towards them. Washington flicked his horses reins and the white mare trodded out to meet the redcoats with Alfred following close behind.
This is it. It will be all over in a minute, no need to be so giddy. He couldn't deny he felt some excitement at the idea of seeing his suppressor surrender, to see Arthur acknowledge his independence but at the same time he felt a since of horror at seeing someone he had respected...
No. Can't think of that stuff right now! I'll deal with it later.
The blond man licked his lips trying to draw in moisture as the figures came into view...except there was a problem. Arthur was not with them.
Suddenly all of his giddiness turned to pure rage as Alfred realized Arthur had no intention of recognizing him.
“What is this?” Washington remarked coldly to O'Hara.
“I am here to present this sword as a sign of our surrender.” the man mumbled as he held the blade up with a look of contempt.
“Where is Arthur?!” Alfred cried out unable to restrain himself.
Washington gave him a hard but understanding look.
“Yes. Where is Cornwallis? Why are not he and Arthur here to give their surrender?”
O'Hara frowned, “They are...both ill. Will you not take the sword?”
“Ill? Ill!?”
“Alfred...” Washington turned to give O'Hara a dark look, “I will not. It is an insult.”
“That's what de Rochambeau said.” Brigadier O'Hara said with an irritable sigh as he lowered his arms.
“Well then, what shall I do with it?”
Washington considered a moment then nodded to his Major-General Benjamin Lincoln and the British Brigadier quickly gave it to him.
“It is done. We're finished here, come Alfred.”
But the blond man stood fast staring out over to the city in passionate rage.
“How dare he mock me-us like this! He should have come in person! Should have accepted his defeat! Why does he still refuse to acknowledge me-I mean us?!”
Washington shook his head, “The war is over Alfred...did you think anything would change between you two even now? No, if anything has changed it has been for the worse.”
Blue eyes flashed at him in anger and pain.
“...I'm sorry, but there is nothing more to be done.”
The General tugged his horses reins once more and disappeared back into their lines leaving Alfred alone on the battlefield.
The war is over...that means-he's going to be taken prisoner!
In panic he burst into a run towards the town his breath coming in short painfully gasps, I have to see him! I have to see him before he's gone!
The troops were already mobilizing to enter Yorktown and take the rest of the British officers prisoner Alfred would have to hurry and find Arthur before he was lost in the sea of captives.
