[link] The Hetalia Fanfiction Contest!
Good evening from England! Do you like reading and writing Hetalia fanfiction? Would you like to test your limits in a friendly enviroment? Experiment with different characters, styles, settings? Get feedback from fellow writers? Expand the available reading material for rare and crack pairings?
I host a small fanfiction contest through a closed group on facebook (although you can host your stories anywhere public, such as a fanfiction archive or a public blog). The basic concept is as follows:
To give you an idea, the pairings we've had so far are:
EDIT: if there are a dozen or so people who would like to do this, but don't want to over facebook, I could set it up over at fanfiction.net. Please comment if that suits you.
I host a small fanfiction contest through a closed group on facebook (although you can host your stories anywhere public, such as a fanfiction archive or a public blog). The basic concept is as follows:
- A "pairing" is announced. This is two or more characters you must include, and make interact, in your story. Their relationship (i.e. you don't have to romantically entangle them) and the plot etc is all up to you (i.e. no prompt will be given - anything goes). You have a week to write a short story.
- The contestants read all the stories over four days and vote for their favourite. The author receiving the least number of votes does not proceed to the next round (but will still participate in the voting stage).
- Rinse and repeat, until only one remains to be crowned the contest champion. To up the difficulty level, the pairings get crackier as the contest goes on.
To give you an idea, the pairings we've had so far are:
- Finland and Russia
- Holy Roman Empire and Chibitalia
- Cuba, Canada and Prussia
- Vietnam and Seychelles
- Tony and Shinatty-chan
EDIT: if there are a dozen or so people who would like to do this, but don't want to over facebook, I could set it up over at fanfiction.net. Please comment if that suits you.

Who's the pairing?
How long is the entry?
Is there a limit on the rating or does anything go?

The pairing will be announced at the start of each round. So you won't know what you'd be in for. I aim to keep a balance over het / same sex pairings, geographical regions, popularity etc, so there will be hopefully quite a variety including some less common pairs.
The entry is as long as you want it to be. I've seen some that were barely a paragraph, while the Yu-Gi-Oh! one I help run can get to 13,000 words each entry. It's just how much you want to / can write in the time given. You'll be voted for by your peers, and they will judge on quality and enjoyment rather than length.
There's no limit on the rating, subject to the terms and conditions of wherever you post the fic (e.g. ff.net doesn't permit graphic adult material). I ask that all necessary warnings are included at the start of a fic so people can choose not to read - i.e. a higher rating may mean that you have less readers.

Okay, my experience says otherwise, but it could be the forum I happened to join.
*nods* What happens if you sign up but decide you don't like the pairing? For example, I might have no problem writing Prussia/Canada, but Prussia/Germany makes me want to run screaming for the hills. ;p Or America is my all time fave character, but I know nothing about Viet Nam. I would be very hesitant to write that, since I have no idea what her character is like. ^^; is there a choice of pairings, or just the one to take it or leave it?
Okay... run a writing contest comm & I noticed we get more entries when there's a specific word count than an open one. Also longer doesn't necessarily mean better & we have some awesoem writers over there too. ;p
I know ff.net doesn't permit that, but journal here does, and Ao3 does. Plus I might rate something high cuz of Romano's potty mouth, even though it's basically a G-rated fic. Are we supposed to warn for something like yaoi or yuri or not? Or just basic squicks, like blood play, scat, death, non-com/dub-con? Something like warning for character death, for example, can get you less readers too. There's so many different factors in what someone will read or not.
Sorry, if I have a million & one questions, I just want to know what I'm getting into if I join.

- You have to write the pairing, i.e. you have to have those two characters interact. However, how you choose to do that is entirely up to you. So, taking Prussia/Germany, you could do a brotherly argument, or political intrigue, or even Germany seeing that Prussia is in a relationship with Canada and Prussia having to give him "the talk"... And regards less established characters, you can either go off basic descriptions on the wiki or do a bit more research - there's always going to be room for interpretation, and I don't think people mind a bit of OOCness if the story's good. The point of this contest is to stretch yourself and tackle characters and pairings you wouldn't otherwise.

- I'm not out to usurp any existing contests here! Let me say that first. I don't want to do a word count because I want to encourage creativity. You write as much as you want to, as much as you feel you can in the time available. So you could do an epic one week and then a messenger-format 20-line conversation the following week. I totally agree, longer doesn't necessarily mean better. That's why there's a voting system ;)

- If I run it on ff.net, I will restrict entries to being posted on ff.net, and subject to their guidelines. Yes you should warn for graphic scenes, basic squicks, character death. It's up to you whether you choose to write something which may alienate readers - but sometimes all you need to get through a round is one vote. Most entries will be T or M rated.
It sounds to me like this contest isn't for you, and if you're busy with others you might not have the time anyway, but have a think and let me know if you're interested.

It's multi-fandom for one thing, for another its focus is hentai ;p for another, so you're not usurping anything. So basically anything goes as long as it fits the pairing. *nods*
If you run it over at ff.net, I'll probably decline as I'm not posting over there any more after the recent stupidity that went on over there. So if you run it here, which seems like a good idea, since you've reached out to people over here, I'll give it a shot. Like I said, I run a comm for hentai & "squick" is an upcoming prompt, so I'm used to pretty much anything goes, but I understand form other comms I've written for you can't always do what you want. ;p If you do, you warn for it, but I can't see it alienating readers if it's well written. (I do have my own squicks ;p)
It does & it doesn't. I do like a good challenge & I'm just trying to get as much info on how it works to see if I can fit it in with everything I do, plus work. ;p But I am leaning towards entering. When does it officially start?

Edit: And yeah, I think it'd be a lot easier if it was made into a community here or something. My FFN is kind of for my own personal stories; I've stated there that I don't really do requests/prompts except on very unique occasions.

I'd prefer ff.net myself, LJ is dying and I don't have a DW, but I'll see what the response here is like.

A question though, how many words is a short story? Just one story or can we post several ones about that week's pair?
By the way, Last Pair = MIND BLOWN!! I do hope that if I do participate, my mind wouldn't suddenly goes blank for that kind of pairing. (Here's an idea, Flying Mint Bunny x Norway's Troll?)

As many words as you like. Enough to make it complete, with a proper ending. 3000 is about the mid range for my YGO one, the previous Hetalia one ran much shorter - I think people were writing them hours before they were due!
And yes, only one story will count towards voting. But if you feel inspired, there's nothing stopping you writing more and simply entering the best one!
Ahahah thank you! XD And FMB is overdue an appearance...
