[link] The Hetalia Fanfiction Contest!

Good evening from England!  Do you like reading and writing Hetalia fanfiction?  Would you like to test your limits in a friendly enviroment? Experiment with different characters, styles, settings? Get feedback from fellow writers? Expand the available reading material for rare and crack pairings?

I host a small fanfiction contest through a closed group on facebook (although you can host your stories anywhere public, such as a fanfiction archive or a public blog). The basic concept is as follows:
  • A "pairing" is announced.  This is two or more characters you must include, and make interact, in your story.  Their relationship (i.e. you don't have to romantically entangle them) and the plot etc is all up to you (i.e. no prompt will be given - anything goes).  You have a week to write a short story.
  • The contestants read all the stories over four days and vote for their favourite.  The author receiving the least number of votes does not proceed to the next round (but will still participate in the voting stage).
  • Rinse and repeat, until only one remains to be crowned the contest champion.  To up the difficulty level, the pairings get crackier as the contest goes on.
We're currently signing up for season 2!  It is a hefty time commitment, but hopefully it will also be fun and rewarding.  The season will start when we have sufficient sign-ups (ideally at least ten - although that doesn't mean the contest will last nine rounds, due to the inevitable drop-outs).

To give you an idea, the pairings we've had so far are:
  • Finland and Russia
  • Holy Roman Empire and Chibitalia
  • Cuba, Canada and Prussia
  • Vietnam and Seychelles
  • Tony and Shinatty-chan
I hope some of you will consider giving the contest a try!

EDIT: if there are a dozen or so people who would like to do this, but don't want to over facebook, I could set it up over at fanfiction.net.  Please comment if that suits you.

I'd love to enter, but I don't have a facebook (ooh shocker XD). Is it possible to still enter somehow?

Yeah, I have the same issue. ^^; Is there a way to contact via e-mail, or some such thing?

I can see if some of my followers and readers on ffn would be interested.

I haven't gotten to talk to some of the people I think will be interested, but ~JustMakeLeftTurns is

Urg……I feel like I'm spamming…… AnonymousSanSama is interested too.

Well that's a new pairing.

[identity profile] aphvietnam.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Can't wait to see the results... would join but English and grammar are my weak side...

[identity profile] aphvietnam.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well maybe I will! Thanks for the motivational speech! Oh and could you maybe run it over to fanfiction.net instead? I don't really use my Facebook account that much...

This sounds like a great idea save I don't mix my Facebook and fandoms so I'll have to unfortunately pass. Otherwise I absolutely love this and hope it works out great!

[identity profile] coeurgryffondor.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I think on FF.net or even LJ might get a better response of people who want to do it and will do it.

Oooh, on FFN, maybe! :D (not interested for doing it on FB) I'd be interested, but I'm extremely busy right now, what with writing a long fic already and my trouble with the less known characters (etc. Seychelles, Vietnam, Cuba). But if this is going to continue in the future (like a year from now x_x), I'd definitely be on a lookout for this! :)

If it'd be on FF.net, I'd do it, since I will not mix facebook and fandoms (reasons. Many reasons. Mostly so I can get hired).

[identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I would do it if it was here. I don't post over at ff.net anymore, nor do I do facebook. It sounds like fun.

Who's the pairing?

How long is the entry?

Is there a limit on the rating or does anything go?

[identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for answering my questions.

Okay, my experience says otherwise, but it could be the forum I happened to join.

*nods* What happens if you sign up but decide you don't like the pairing? For example, I might have no problem writing Prussia/Canada, but Prussia/Germany makes me want to run screaming for the hills. ;p Or America is my all time fave character, but I know nothing about Viet Nam. I would be very hesitant to write that, since I have no idea what her character is like. ^^; is there a choice of pairings, or just the one to take it or leave it?

Okay... run a writing contest comm & I noticed we get more entries when there's a specific word count than an open one. Also longer doesn't necessarily mean better & we have some awesoem writers over there too. ;p

I know ff.net doesn't permit that, but journal here does, and Ao3 does. Plus I might rate something high cuz of Romano's potty mouth, even though it's basically a G-rated fic. Are we supposed to warn for something like yaoi or yuri or not? Or just basic squicks, like blood play, scat, death, non-com/dub-con? Something like warning for character death, for example, can get you less readers too. There's so many different factors in what someone will read or not.

Sorry, if I have a million & one questions, I just want to know what I'm getting into if I join.

[identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. That's fair enough & it totally works for me. If OOCness is okay because someone doesn't know a character.. then I'm good with it. ;p

It's multi-fandom for one thing, for another its focus is hentai ;p for another, so you're not usurping anything. So basically anything goes as long as it fits the pairing. *nods*

If you run it over at ff.net, I'll probably decline as I'm not posting over there any more after the recent stupidity that went on over there. So if you run it here, which seems like a good idea, since you've reached out to people over here, I'll give it a shot. Like I said, I run a comm for hentai & "squick" is an upcoming prompt, so I'm used to pretty much anything goes, but I understand form other comms I've written for you can't always do what you want. ;p If you do, you warn for it, but I can't see it alienating readers if it's well written. (I do have my own squicks ;p)

It does & it doesn't. I do like a good challenge & I'm just trying to get as much info on how it works to see if I can fit it in with everything I do, plus work. ;p But I am leaning towards entering. When does it officially start?

[identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I hope you'll post something letting everyone know where & when. It does sound like something I'd do, so count me in. :D

[identity profile] webcomix.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
If we joined, would we have to participate in every single round? It's actually not because I'm snobby about characters - not at all! - but I'm jobhunting so I may have some weeks where I'm really busy.

Edit: And yeah, I think it'd be a lot easier if it was made into a community here or something. My FFN is kind of for my own personal stories; I've stated there that I don't really do requests/prompts except on very unique occasions.

[identity profile] sirvalkyrie.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I am interested in this, but like many others I am not wanting to do this on Facebook.

[identity profile] sirvalkyrie.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would be willing to participate. But, as I don't post in fanfiction.net anymore, I will have difficulties posting links to my works since they remove urls for most sites.

[identity profile] draytheo.livejournal.com 2012-09-18 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested ^^ but, again, like everyone else - I'd prefer to do it on LJ or FFN rather than facebook XD

[identity profile] irony-secondary.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested in this, but think it will be better to create an LJ comm for this then go else where. I'm not really comfortable with FB or FF.net, though I wouldn't mind the later

A question though, how many words is a short story? Just one story or can we post several ones about that week's pair?

By the way, Last Pair = MIND BLOWN!! I do hope that if I do participate, my mind wouldn't suddenly goes blank for that kind of pairing. (Here's an idea, Flying Mint Bunny x Norway's Troll?)

[identity profile] zelda-queen.livejournal.com 2012-09-23 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The FF.net arrangement sounds great! I'm in, if there's that option.
