Hetalia Best Of

Hello everybody.

I'm interested in making an Hetalia best of. A contest where the fandom votes for the best of Hetalia, in both Canon and Fanon.
Before making it, I wish to know if people are actually interested in the whole idea.
More info under the cut!

I mentioned the idea a few days ago on my tumblr, but must not have caught enough attention because I'm non existent at tumblr.
You can see the post here:
http://latnien.tumblr.com/post/26387906525

I've been told this hasn't been done before in big scale, so I decided to continue with the idea.
Basically the fandom would nominate material for a category and depending on the amount of entries we can do knock out rounds or something similar (That's why I'm posting here, you guys can tell me your ideas.)

The contest would separate Canon and Fanon (Fics to be exact). Having categories for each. I like the idea of adding a Fanart category too, but I know some artists can be, hm, touchy about such type of stuff. You guys tell me what you think.

The concept is to make the best of the best being know in the fandom.

For example Canon would have this sub-categories:

Best Comic.

Best Event.

Best Official Art.

Best Animated Comic.

Most liked Male Character.

Most liked Female Character.

Most liked Character.

Best Character Introduction.

Best parody/joke.

Best outfit.

Fics:

Best Fanfic.

Best Romance Fanfic.

Best Comedy Fanfic.

Best Historical Fanfic.

Best Drama/Angst Fanfic.

Best Joke in a Fanfic.

Best Kiss.

Best Sex Scene

Best Declaration of Love.

Best Hero in Action fic.

Best Villain in Action fic.

If we were to add the Fanart category too:

Best Fanart.

Best Pairing Fanart.

Best Historical related Fanart.

Best Cultural Related Fanart (As in fanart with traditional clothing.)

Best Non-Canon comic.

Best Doujin.

Of course, these are the ideas I thought and you guys can throw more ideas.

I offer to make a site for this event. I'm a web designer and I don't mind doing space for something like this, I have a lot of space on my host.
I can code the whole page and make submits and polls. And I can get the domain for free.

So, is anybody interested in this idea?
Someone wants to help maybe?
Any idea, concept or something that can be added?

I really wish we can do this, seems like a good chance to gather the fandom together again and regain some interest!

I'd be interested.

Suggestion regarding fanfiction/fanart things:
It might be helpful to offer additional categories based on character grouping. "Best overall", and then "best featuring X nation group" or something.

Because I suspect that otherwise, a lot of it will feature the same groups of characters again and again.
Though I guess it would be difficult to decide how to divide everyone up.

Yes, that's exactly it!
Might be tricky, since some can fit into more than one group, though.

That might work. So, Germany would be in Axis grouping, but not in Germanics grouping, that kind of thing, right?

Ohh, I see, now I get it. Makes sense enough!

I'd love to participate in something like that. If it has its own website, it would make it a lot easier to share ideas and vote on the categories. I think it's a great idea.

This sounds like fun, but it has to be managed carefully because it has a lot of potential for wank. One of my old fandoms had annual fanfiction awards, and there were always hurt feelings when someone didn't win and accusations of "well, that fanfic only won because it had a popular pairing even though this and that fanfic were actually better!"
pennilee: (Yeah!)

Hey, why not? Just be careful, though, I was once part of a website that hosted awards but soon they gave up. :P However, I'd be willing to join or participate! :)

Ahhh, this is a brilliant idea!

To add on to what the user above said, though, I'm personally voting that we leave the fanon side of it out, and only nominate canon stuff.

Or maybe replace fanon with fandom? Like, "most hilarious fandom moment", "most heartwarming fandom moment", and so on. 'Cause I don't know about anyone else, but I think we definitely had a lot of memorable moments during the '11 Christmas event!

+ 1 definitely! :)

[identity profile] thisisvodka.livejournal.com 2012-07-07 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's a good point, actually. ^^;
I'd say just stick to canon stuff, then. Because with fan works there's still room for a lot of room for hurt and wank and it'd be better to try and keep the thing mostly positive if possible. :'D

One way to avoid wank with the fanon categories would be to create different categories for the most popular pairings and have one category that includes all rarer pairings. Maybe somehting like this:

Best USUK
Best GerIta
Best Spamano
Best FrUK
Best Romance Fic (other pairings)

Otherwise someone is definitely going to complain about how, say, a Sweden/Taiwan fic has no chance no matter how good it is because the popular pairings have more fans who will vote for fics with them.

I understand what you mean, and I haven't even taken part in any big event so far, but since some of them have been very participated, that would still be fun to remember them. I mean, I know some have been left out because they weren't part of the fandom yet or for whatever reason, but that "best of" wouldn't be judging anyone, just.. you know, it would show which ones were the most participated events?

As for the fanworks, it's true that almost everyone can see the fanarts (even though it's useless to day that artists who use pixiv, for example, have many more chances to have their works seen by others) but what about the fanfictions? Not everyone can write in English and not everyone can read a whole story in English either. It would mean (to me at least) leaving out a very big part of the fandom - and you surely can't put a category for every language, because that would become too big, and anyway the people taking part in any non-english fandom would barely take part to the voting here - at least this is my guess.
You could still hold it only for the written-in-English fanfictions, but then it wouldn't be a real best of, at least in my opinion.

Besides, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] kahlanaisling when they say it would be a bit intimidating.

I'm all for it ^_^

But what do you mean by "Best character introduction"?

And might I suggest Best Character Song and Best Version of MKC and HFP for Canon categories?

[identity profile] xxwolfgirlxx.livejournal.com 2012-07-07 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I was wondering because like you said, most characters just appeared out of thin air or all appeared at once at the meeting of the world comic or remained in stasis as an entry on Hima's blog until they appear out of thin air. or on a friggen map like NZ

No one really had an "Introduction"

hmmm... well then... I KNOW WHO I'M VOTING FOR!!!!

[identity profile] kahlanaisling.livejournal.com 2012-07-07 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I second the idea of leaving fandom out of it; as much as we love others in the fandom, it's simply too big and could cause a lot of drama.

Also: This would be really intimidating to some people.

In an old fandom I was part of there were people who held votes and such every year and (while they were also stuck-up, elitist jerks) it made it seem as if there was some elite organization judging everything from afar -- and not in a positive way. While it gave me personally something to aspire to, I'm a competitive person, and someone young and new to the fandom might find it nerve-wracking to post fanworks and know that there's a possibility someone running this might come across it.

On the other hand, participation is completely optional and fan-driven, and I think that if we're careful, we could pull it off.

I would leave Canonworks out of it, though. It just feels a little wrong to me, I can't quite explain it.

ALSO, and I was just discussing this with a few friends:

The problem with fanworks awards is that there are a few authors, such as George DeValier and Glassamilk, who would win everything simply because of popularity. It doesn't matter if there are better writers out there (which I firmly believe there are), the names people recognize are more likely to win. That makes it rather unfair.

And I've figured out why I don't think Canon is a good category to include. There's already too much wank from sub vs dub and anime vs manga that an award would make one of them inherently better, which is anything but true.

AO3 has an Anonymous Posting option -- maybe we could get authors' permission to repost their works anonymously, deleting them after the event is over?
