This may be the strangest thing I could ever ask.

All these two or three years later in the Hetalia fandom I am still having an issue. I know way back in 2008-2009 people called North and South Italy Lovino and Feliciano. However, when the episodes started streaming and the manga was being translated their names were (correctly?) translated as Veneziano and Romano. However, I have a friend who says Feli and Lovi are the names she has seen ALL over, and never saw any differently. Just so I can clear this up with her which is really the canon name?

It's actually both.

See, Feliciano Vargas and Lovino Vargas are their "human" names, while Italy Veneziano and Italy Romano are their country names.

So they're BOTH canon names. It's just one set is human names and the other is country names.

That make sense?

Veneziano = Venice
Romano = Rome

"Feliciano Vargas" and "Lovino Vargas" are their human names, in the same way America is Alfred. ;u;

"Veneziano" and "Romano" are their nation names, since they can't both be just "Italy"

Both are 100% canon, as Himaruya gave the names to them.

While we're on the topic of names, can someone give me a list of countries and their names? It's prob a dumb question, but I watched the anime, and I don't recall anyone having actual names.. So when I started reading the dj's I have no idea who's who's..Please, thank you, and I'm sorry if I seem dumb.

Little corrections:

"Alfroskaya" would be "arufurosukaya" in katakana. Since it's "arurofusukaya", Belarus' name is more like "Natalia Arlovskaya".
Katakana for Turkey's last name is "adonan", so "Sadık Adnan" is most accurate.

Edit: Also supposedly Himaruya had some secret reason behind specifically not giving Germany a last name, too. Idk. I go with Beilschmidt, but he canonly doesn't have one.

Sorry for butting in and all

Thank you very much for your help!

Also, it should be "Basch", not "Vash". The katakana used is "ba", and in German, a v makes a sound similar to and f. If the name was Vash, it would sound like "Fahsh".

Really? This is why I need to learn how to understand Japanese. Thanks for the update!

Another little correction, in the katakana of Antonio Fernández Carriedo, it's written Hernández actually. So, it should be Antonio Hernández Carriedo.
Vash Zwingli is actually Basch Zwingly and Im Young Soo, is Lee Yonsu.

I do believe in the anime and in the actual webcomic they just go by country names. Himaruya only made up human names for them due to fan pressure. They are official, but he doesn't use them as far as I know.

He only used them once.

I cannot find the strip, but it was some commercial Japan was watching with America in it. Some girl in the commercial, if I remember correctly, called him Alfred.

They were used once or twice on April's Fools too, the one hosted by Spain.

Veneziano and Romano are the 'country' names based on the cities in Italy. Feliciano is N. Italy's human name and Lovino is S. Italy's human name. Does that help? Both are technically cannon, as Himaruya created both of the names. Strictly in the manga/anime, their country names would be cannon.

This is the strangest thing you've ever asked? Lol I was expecting something outrageous, but oh well.

Both of their two names are canon. You can call them either one and still be correct.
