Original post

Translation thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lost_hitsu

"String puller Germany"

There is lately a rumour going around in European newspaper and internet "As Greece joined the EU, Germany clearly predicted the current situation!"

And based on that the theory: Well, was it Germany's doing after all?

Switzerland is part of Schengen, the European Free Trade Association.

On 6th August 2011 The Swiss Franc effectively switched to a euro peg: The Franc had always floated independently until its currency appreciation became unsustainable during the Eurozone debt crisis. The peg involves a minimum exchange rate of 1.20 francs to the euro, currently there is no upper bound in place.
Switzerland is not an EU member and expresses no ambitions to become an EU member. However ERM II is the only existing mechanism for Euro pegging therefore Switzerland is said to be an unofficial member.

Yeah, EU business, complicated as usual.

[identity profile] mertseguer.livejournal.com 2011-12-16 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
.. I know that... but Schengen doesn't hold conventions so it's most likely an EU thing.

And it isn't really complicated. Being part of the EU would mean that Switzerland would have to give bank data of European citizens to their countries which would ruin one of their main sources of income.
So they aren't, not officially or unofficially.

Apparently I tread on your toes there.
You are right of course Switzerland does not partake in EU summits.

I'm not the one saying they are an unofficial member it's simply a fact stated by the EU and founded in the special trade, visa and currency relations.

And yes, I still think EU business is pretty complicated, it was a general statement.
I did not talk about Switzerland's relations to the EU.

Being part of the EU would mean that Switzerland would have to give bank data of European citizens to their countries

Actually it does just that with Germany since the new agreement between those two countries this year and is in talks with other countries about it.
Just saying.
