Summary: The Cold War had broken them all...

Belarus smiled slightly when Russia approached Ukraine.

"Brother! Are you well? I heard that America... was..." Belarus swayed unsteadily on her feet, staring at him through the thick bandages wrapped around her forehead and most of her face. "He... was t-troubling you..." As if those few sentences had sapped all her strength, Belarus collapsed against Ivan. He frowned and looked at her as though all that he saw was an annoying little fly which had decided to land on his sleeve. What he didn't see was how her blue eyes shone with unshed tears, bright and framed by the bloodstained cloth. He didn't see the way she was still struggling to catch her breath in the chilly room. His was the gaze that looked but did not see. Oblivious, Belarus held on to Russia with her rough hands damaged by labour. All she felt was the joy that came with being able to hold her beloved brother's arm without being shaken off or screamed at. Behind her, Ukraine shivered and let out a shaky breath, terrified of their Ivan. None of her siblings seemed to see anything anymore; at times, it seemed that she was the only one who could view the whole situation through unbiased eyes.

"Ah, Natasha. How are you today? My government is sending aid to your helpless little country." with a light shrug, Ivan shook Belarus off and watched as she tottered backwards for a moment before collapsing like a rag doll. "How magnificent communism is! Everybody is equal. Be grateful, Natasha. Nobody would help you otherwise. Worthless child." Ivan turned his gaze to the trembling girl. He nudged her in the ribs with his foot, smiling that childlike smile.

"Natalya! Please stop that, Vanya, she's ill! Can't you see how sickly the poor child is, Vanya you must stop that!" Ukraine was beside Belarus in seconds, cradling her damaged body in her arms. Belarus struggled to sit up, insisting that she was fine. Smiling, he sat down on Belarus's bed, sweeping her half-painted matryoshkas onto the ground. She gave a soft squeak of protest, staring at the smallest doll as it rolled to her feet. They were supposed to be Russia's welcome home gift... She was supposed to help him celebrate his brief freedom from that detested, dreary Germany...! Ukraine shushed Belarus, gently stroking her hair. The both of them stared mutely as Russia did a thorough search of their room. Ukraine was mentally praying that it would all be over, that he would leave before any damage was done. She would never dare to commit treason... so why was he looking for evidence?

To her relief, he found none. Of course he didn't. Brushing off his coat, Ivan got up to leave. Belarus scrambled to her feet and pulled open the door, looking pitifully hopeful. She reached out to catch hold of his sleeve, but Ivan pulled away. He didn't even respond to her touch with a frightened "Go away!!" He just strode out of the room, completely oblivious to the girl he left behind.

    "Goodbye!"

    That was it.

    Goodbye.

Ukraine wished that it was forever. It might have been wicked to think so, but she did not want this monster of a brother to return. Belarus leaned her weight on the doorframe, too exhausted from her factory work to feel anything beyond her usual disappointment.

"Oh, poor child. He's not going to come back anymore, Natalya." Yekaterina said quietly, holding her broken sister close. "Our Vanya left when the USSR came."

A bit of explanation required here. This is veeeery close to the end of Communism and the Cold War, and Prussia and Hungary have been transferred to East Germany, the detested, dreary Germany Belarus was referring to. Russia is not stupid, and before the whole thing blows up into a tug-of-war and official matters come into the picture, he sends the two of them away. Russia himself has become even crazier now that he's sensed the end of his rule and the loss of two nations to torture. Belarus is so beaten up because her nation's purpose was basically to work and work and work until the USSR was satisfied. And they never were. That also accounts for her OOCness, because she's just physically a kid, nation-strengths or no. One person can only do so much before they change.

Hope you enjoyed this one too! Halfway there :D
