Looking for artists, writers, and designers!

Some of you may remember World Parade, a Hetalia fan magazine that discontinued this past summer. However, a new magazine is expected to take its place...

The Circle is an up and coming fanzine that will focus on history, politics, and the fandom's interaction with both. It captures Hetali's essence-- taking history and affairs to a more familiar, personal level while being informative and fun, with each issue expected to have a historical theme that is relevant to the fandom.

But The Circle will not be possible without the help of many dedicated, talented fans.  If you're interested in taking part in this enriching experience, please read on for more details. PM me your application when complete.

• Prerequisites for all positions :

- Use MSN/Windows Live Messenger actively or be willing to download it
- Free time, diligence,commitment

• Introduction:

I'm really excited about this new magazine project and getting to meet all of you wonderful fans. But I do understand that some of you may be concerned due to the discontinuation of the last magazine project, World Parade. It was discontinued, but I learned so much from past mistakes. With experience and research combined, I hope to have an efficient and orderly staff system that will ensure the continuation of The Circle. In other words, I may have screwed up with a couple things on World Parade, but things have changed for the better. I look forward to looking through your applications, and good luck!

• What I expect from you:

All major positions require someone who is firm enough to make sure the other staff stay on task, someone who is active online, someone who is not afraid to offer constructive criticism, and someone who will do whatever it takes to see that everything is done before the due date. The magazine will most likely be put out every two months, so you need to contribute at least a few hours to the magazine each month. If you cannot do that regularly, please do not apply.
I'm looking for outgoing, friendly people who are willing to make connections with the other staffers and participate in 'off duty' group chats. I will not accept anyone who is unwilling to make friendships and participate with us outside of formal business. I will also not accept anyone who appears to be unable to handle criticism. Also, if you cannot handle profanity and sexual humor, I would advise you not to apply. Casual get-togethers in the past have proven to be rowdy. ;)

• Major Positions:

• Head of Art:

The primary responsibilities of the Head of Art are to draw magazine illustrations, organize and oversee all artist activities. That includes telling the artists what to draw and what article/advertisement to draw it for, seeing that all artwork is completed and filed in the online system properly, and even contacting outside artists for permission to use their artwork in the magazine. Figure out what the articles are about, tell the artists what to draw, see that the art looks appropriate and magazine ready, report progress, issues, and any other relevant information to the editor, and oversee the artist process to ensure all artwork is being done in a timely, efficient manner. You'll need an artistic eye for the job.

• Head of Proofing:

The primary responsibilities of the Head of Proofing are to organize and oversee all proofing activities. That includes proofing all articles that are turned into the file system and placing them in the appropriate folder once finished, looking over the final magazine design to ensure everything looks visually acceptable and error-free, providing feedback to the writers, working with the Head of Writing to ensure quality proofing, seeing that all articles are appropriate and not offensive, checking the information within articles to make sure it is factually accurate, reporting progress, issues, and any other relevant information to the editor, and overseeing the editing process to ensure all work is being done in a timely, efficient manner. You'll need a very sharp eye for typos, grammar, writing mechanics, and style.

Please proof the following article taken from Issue 6 of World Parade and feel free to make any changes you feel necessary as long as you explain any major edits:
The variability of Hetalia fanfiction has always been interesting. The characters, their dynamic, and potential relationships seem to translate into a wide variety of topics and genres, with character types that can be explored in almost any setting.

In a fandom that seems largely built on its ability to adapt the multitude of stories its writers have concocted, a character that enjoys unexpected popularity and versatility is Prussia.

A classic dark horse character, Prussia has been propelled largely by a combination of uniqueness and mystery. A writer giving the audience enough to maintain interest but not giving as much detail or time– leaving questions about that character’s personality. Thus, a dark horse is created.

More importantly, a dark horse is created due to their ability to do almost anything in fandom, in being a character that can fill many roles.

In Prussia we see the screwball, the warrior, the loveable loser, the bad boy, the good friend, and the loving brother.

However, mostly, we see the exception that proves the rule.

Before the ability for former states to survive was confirmed by Himaruya, Prussia’s survival, despite technically no longer existing, was shrouded in mystery. He played the role of tragedy, raised questions about mortality, about how human or not human the nation characters actually are. Largely, fics dealing with this aspect of his character – his alleged death and, more recently, depicting his survival, are about questions at the center of most fiction. Because he seems somehow different, he’s used as a means to explore the other nations. While oftentimes a more dramatic role difficult to pull off in the context of his character as Himaruya portrays him, when done correctly it is a study of the norm through the exception, perhaps his most literary role in fandom.

• Advertisement Manager:

The primary responsibility of the Advertisement Manager is to see that the magazine is supplied with advertisement content and copy. That includes finding Hetalia-based organizations, websites, users, and communities to advertise, dealing with advertisement requests, asking prospective clients for permission and information, sending the information to the editor, writing the slogan and body copy for the ads, and reporting progress, issues, and any other relevant information to the editor. You'll need creativity and wit and a good sense of style for writing effective body copy.

Please write two 1-paragraph long ads for two different products, making it as professional as possible with a header, slogan (optional but preferred), body copy, and call to action. You do NOT have to graphically design the ad:
1. (The first ad may be for any product you wish. It would be for a Hetalia forum you roleplay on, or a Hetalia community you really enjoy.)
2. (The second must an advertisement for the Cracktalia LJ community)

• Minor Positions (just as important):

- Artists
- Writers
- Designers

• Job Descriptions:

I am looking for an artist who has the versatility to take time on creating either one or two detailed pieces each issue, or several smaller, less detailed pieces each issue. Having a certain level of skill is required, but I am not looking for someone brilliant. It is most important to me that you are passionate and dedicated.
Writers need to be creative and diligent and willing to contribute 1-2 articles each issue. I will kick you off the team if you begin to slack about the deadline. Your work does not need to be perfect-- what is most important is that writers work with the editor and Head of Writing to supply the magazine with entertaining yet informative articles. Be willing to research.
Designers must use Adobe InDesign and any other program is not acceptable. I am looking for people who can layout about 2-3 advertisements/articles each issue. Designers will work together with the editor and Advertisement Manager to ensure quality magazine pages and ads.

Thank you for showing interest in The Circle! There is no due date for the applications but I would like them as soon as possible, as I want to have the first issue completed some time in December. Once you PM the application to me, expect a prompt response whether you were accepted or not.
