[Fanfic] After the Semi-Finals (+ a sketch)
Title: After the Semi-Finals
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Benelux + Norway, mention of others.
Warnings: None.
Summary: Belgium and Netherlands aren't really pleased with the results of the Eurovision semi-finals. Neither is Norway.
"It's that time of the year, isn't it," he sighed when he saw them walking up to his house. Of course he had followed the happenings of the second semi-final yesterday and although he was pleasantly surprised by the average good quality of the songs, he still wondered how some songs managed to get through. He walked up to the door to open it for them. With one glance he realised they had it rough this time. It was understandable, really. Belgium always sent in amazing unique songs and even his brother had a nice entry, in comparison to other years.
"Come in. I guess we'll skip the coffee and get straight to the alcohol?"
He only got a nod from his sister. His brother didn't even react. When they got all seated in the backyard, accompanied with Belgian beers and French wine, the youngest of the three sighed and looked at them. "Well, how did it go?"
"Boy cot," was his brother's response.
"You say that every year, yet your people still want to participate in the madness," Luxembourg said, pouring some wine for himself.
"It's a political game.. the former Soviet union has each other.. former Yugoslavia has each other.. even the Nordics have each other.. and what are we? That tiny little part of Western Europe who doesn't automatically qualify for the finals. It's unfair."
Luxembourg decided to ignore his rant. "It's why I stopped participating."
"Because you ran out of people?"
The Netherlands received a prod from his sister because of that. "Don't treat him like that, Willem. He can't help it he's that small."
"That's right. After all you were the one who stole about fifty percent of my lands, Elise," Luxembourg answered calmly. Elise got red but said nothing.
"So what was it this time? Bad performance, bad singers, bad looks maybe?" Luxembourg smiled teasingly. It was nice not to be the mocked one for once. "I told you Willem, you should have kept the barrel organ. Maybe add some fire breathers next year. Or maybe you should wear those funny orange inflatable hats you always have on queensday. Complete with an "I love Netherlands" song, like Belarus did. I am fairly sure you'll win that wa - "
"Luxembourg," their sister warned him. "That's enough."
She was right; the Netherland's expression went from a frown to a deep glare and she was afraid he would throw a fit if their younger brother went on like that. He sighed once again and looked at them, smiling a bit. "Sorry. I honestly believe you both should have advanced to the finals this time."
"But it didn't happen, did it," the Netherlands grunted. "Instead we have Moldavian dwarfs, hyper-as-fuck Irish twins, mister Popular and more crap."
"I liked Denmark's entry - " his sister began.
"I don't care about Denmark's entry."
Luxembourg decided it was time to give them a second beer - they had finished in it no time, the poor souls - and looked at his brother. "You do realise it isn't really about the songs anymore?"
"'Course I do."
"Then don't sulk. The few who know to appreciate music do know your entry this year was a good one. Real music. Europe just wasn't ready for it. And Elise - " he gave her an apologetic smile, " - I don't think everyone in Europe is really fond of jazz." But he meant what he said. He liked both entries and had hoped they would both advance. Partly because it was a good song.. and partly because of this. He always was the victim of them being sore losers. Especially their brother was good in ranting weeks about it.
"I'm officially the only country who never got through since we have those semi-finals," the Netherlands muttered.
Belgium whacked him over his head. "And you won four times in history, that's not what many can say."
"I won five times," Luxembourg said grinningly, before realising this probably wasn't exactly the right moment to share that fact.
"Michèl, you idiot," his sister scolded him. "Don't give him more reasons to be all miserable."
He shrugged and finished his third glass of wine. It was one of those times to get horribly drunk. The Benelux were sometimes all on their own in the big play place of Europe, but they at least had each other.
Meanwhile, in Scandinavia
"Fucking mister Popular."
He had hoped he wouldn't be alone in the loser's corner. "I'm a failure," he muttered, reaching for his sixth aquavit.
This was going to be a long weekend.

And have a Norway sketch of him in his lead singer's dress while we're at it. xD I love Eurovision.

Invite me to the looser party next time will ya?
*ohsolonely*

Comments from a REAL DutchMAN
The characters seemed a bit out of character too much.
besides that it was overall good, hope this helps you
-------------------------------------------------------------
Now to the song festival
UGH I remember the eurovision song festival,
I still remember it like it was yesterday, BECAUSE it was yesterday.
MOLDOVA, and the party had gang WHY how did that become beautiful music, at most it was entertaining to behold but not at all of good quality song wise.
Estonia was laughable at best, it looked like Miley Cyrus meets Hannah Montana it was horrendous song was average use of voice changers and questionable background performers.
England's BigBrother Ireland with their weird stage act, NOO NOOO the lady gaga Twin brothers. And compared to her they are sub par
I hope your proud of your big brother England the made a laughingstock of the eurovision song festival like last time.
We all know the entire east block supports each other
Belgium deserves it more, A capella that was truly amazing, when I saw that it was such an awesome performance
You know who could have gone in their place, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Israel, Latvia.
I wanted to say Us too but because we used the English version of the Song it didn't come out as strong is it could have been. Certain tones in words were too weak.
And Belarus seriously why in English you made the same mistake as us, SkadiPirate's version was the song I hoped you would be singing.
I am truly disappointed in EuroVision song festival watchers taste of this year.
I hate to admit it but Sweden's song was Amazing Truly Amazing, and Austria's and Denmark's.
En nog een fijna dag mensen,
GREETS from the Netherlands bitches.

"Fucking mister Popular." LOL! Denmark, revenge Nor! XD
What does Ned think about Italy's song? ^_^
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
Sweden's song? ugh no thank you. Denmark was ok, but I'm giving Iceland my vote in the finals.
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
the performance, the background dancers the great use of the stage and props, plus a very energy full song.
It really is a good song, your right the Danish one is way better. Its more a matter of taste really.
But not my taste better give me the Austria song, or the Danish Song.
I just saw the Iceland one, and I have to say my vote still goes to Denmark.
I unfortunately missed the first semi round.
So I'll watch that sometime before tomorrow's final round.
greetings again from a REAL dutchMAN
Response from a Real DutchMAN
The orchestra he used, along with the song.
It was a soothing and relaxing sound and tone to it.
I could be a winning son, definitely top 10.
This is probably Neddy's opinion on it a very sober and almost objective look in the song.
But the Real Netherlands would probably keep his opinion to himself.
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
Sadly, Eurovision isn't much about taste anymore. it's mostly just political. sad really, because so many good songs never make it D:
considering Moldova made it...it really can't be much about taste XD
okay...now you really have me curious..
why do you write "REAL dutchMAN" ? because to my half asleep brain, it kinds looks like you're trying to convince me you're a real man and not a fake doll <.
no subject
except I was already out of liquor.. :"CI don't think we were that great, but I felt we did try more seriously this time around and it would've been a nice motivation for next year should we have gotten through. My favourites are probably Finland, Iceland and Denmark. I've yet to hear what Italy and such have to offer though. Some acts were rather amusing and it does make Eurovision fun to watch for a wider audience I guess.
The one song I dislike the most is Sweden's, it makes me want to smack the man back into him. B"| fft- I'm not kidding I actually had trouble sleeping because I WILL BE POPULAR got stuck in my head. Then again, this is probably the reason it might actually win. Don't get me wrong, I love Sweden as a country, but just, not so popular with me thank you. XD Maybe 15 year old Bieber girls will like those lyrics better..Sad/fun fact, me and a friend shared your urge in drawing Norway in that outfit. Far too tempting. XDDD I liked their entry, it was catchy, just really random for a Nordic country I guess? Her singing voice wasn't very well.. but she did look pretty!
Are you planning on writing more eurovision fics? C': (Norway should go hang with the Benelux *shot*)
Reply From the REAL DutchMAN
Not to say that the song they end in are Bad, the are really good actually, but it gives it a political edge.
And yes most Slavic nation vote for each other and most eastern Europe votes for one another.
I was thinking the same about the Scandinavians but I don't see that that's all true, because ALL their songs are amazing, alto from different tastes.
I knew We BeNeLux'ians don't vote for each other that's certain hahaha, Luxembourg even stopped competing a few years back.
and because we AGAIN didn't make it to the finals, for the 7th time now, ever since they put in this new protocol of a Semi-Final 7 years back, we Never got back into a the finals.
Most of the Dutch people are even saying not to compete anymore. I for one say to continue but meh.
--
And you saying I'm not a real man.
Let me ask you are you a man too, or am I to believe there are no guys in this fandom?
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
And I'm also secretly curious about the whole REAL DutchMAN, thing. :'O
Re: Reply from another Dutch®, no caps. Also woman. (Why does this matter and why am I doing it too
It's funny that we Benelux don't really have each other's backs- Maybe it's our overly critical nature? haha I found myself paying extra serious attention to Belgium's song even.. XD
I'd like to see us continue with the song festival and keep competing, it's fun and enjoyable even though we complain so much and I'm sure there are even more people here who think we should keep going.
Re: Reply From a NorwegianWoman (funny that)
although that didn't work for Norway this time - we kinda sucked <.<
a lot of people are thinking about boycott (or so they say)
but meh..it's all just in good fun really 8D
---
pfft, no sorry buddy. I'm a woman XD
Not many guys are into hetalia..(shame)
I'm converting my younger brothers though...if that counts for anything! 8D
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
ohgodno
not ireland! D:
*sobs*
I currently live in Scotland, and if they win I'll NEVER hear the end of it! *cries*
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
haha- Don't worry, I'm not planning on wasting any of my cellphone's credit on Ireland, for sure. XD *patpat*
Scotland-asdfghj I want to visit that place I've only been to England and to Wales for family. :"CAnother Reply from a DutchMan, it matters because we're Dutch and your doing it because it's awesome
And mainly I say it in such a way to see if there are any other guys who are into Hetalia. Still searching, they are Far and Away from where I'm looking so yeah.
And Yeah I was very critical about both our and of the 'Belgen' I really loved that they did a a capella. they deserved a spot in the finals at least. but Israel and Latvia were better then them.
And our entrance was fine but it would have been better in Dutch IMO. it lacked power in certain keywords in the song that should have lifted the atmosphere but didn't.
It could have been because of all the moving around tho.
And I really would want to continue too, those who not try are already losers ;3 And I think we should keep trying to, try to get back to the good old days of reaching the finals.
well... we DID win a Junior eurovision song festival. a year back or so.
So maybe there is hope.
Re: Reply From a NorwegianWoman (funny that)
And yeah most of us are thinking of not even competing next year , like Luxembourg, anymore because of the setbacks we had.
But it's fun to compete in my opinion.
---
no biggies, guess my search continues X3
and well your littel brothers count I guess if they are older then 15/16 years old X3
Who's your favorite Character by the way is it Norway or somebody else?
I'm always curious if people like the nations of their own country most.
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
I shall be stealing my dad's phone to vote for Iceland :D
ohhh you should come to visit! Scotland is beautiful!
I lived in Edinburgh for 2 years, and now I'm living in Dundee...
Edinburgh is nicer <.
Re: Reply from writer, who appears to be Dutch as well! Such a coincidence!
I'm glad you like the fic, and about the characters being ooc.. I have a different opinion. c: Belgium and the Netherlands aren't as fleshed out as the main (bigger? xD) countries in Hetalia and Luxembourg only got an honorable mention. So .. people who write those three will of course have their personalities based on the facts Himaruya gave us, but they won't exactly be the same. I for example roleplay too and I've seen a lot of different versions of Netherlands and Belgium. ;)
And while I like SkadiPirates song, the song for Eurovision has to be written especially for that event. Otherwise people will just end up singing the Lion King.
I'll be rooting for Iceland, I love that song.. and I agree that Austria's and Denmark's is cute nice, too. :3
no subject
Hmm, what Netherlands thinks about it? He'll like it, I've always considered him a type for more melodic music like that. I like it as well, he has a really nice voice to listen at!
Not among my favourites, but definitely getting that song on my laptop. xD
Re: Reply From a NorwegianWoman (funny that)
I sort of wish they made it a rule again that one could only sing in one's own language...it be rather funny ^^
--
sadly only the 14year old one os a fan...still working on getting my 18 year old brother to be a fan - he's stubborn Bl
Norway is definetley one of my faves, but I'm relly fond of all the nordics. not to mention The Netherlands is a really cool character. And Prussia - cause he's awesome ;)
no subject
I love all of the Nordic's entries, and I would have liked Sweden as well if .. the singer didn't sound like he got a bloodnose. xD His voice kills me. Also the lyrics aren't really... deep.
Ooh, draw it! I'd love to see it. I've just checked out your journal and I have to say, you draw really nice! c:
And maybe I will~ Eurovision is one of my favourite events, so...yes, maybe I will. xD
Re: Another Reply from a DutchMan, it matters because we're Dutch and your doing it because it's awe
Hn, I know the singer could have done MUCH better, he was nervous and uncertain from the start, maybe it was a sound problem but that was my first guess. (Denmark sounded a bit hesitant as well) Their rehearsals went incredibly well though. I also prefer the original Dutch version, in English the lyrics become too mushy. :"C But that way only us would have known what he'd be singing so I can understand.;;
Don't know about Latvia and Israel, I seriously forgot what they sounded like. xD I liked Belgium's originality, but I felt it would have worked better as a shorter song and at a fair somewhere;; It was neat but the singing was so so
My favourite winning entry by us ever was 'Een beetje' by Teddy Scholten~
haha Junior Eurovision- xD That entry was adorable. ;a; (Also loved that our singer was acting all big brotherly over the Belgian girl who jodeled)
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
And I believe it is! <3 I'm saving up money to travel, but there are so many places I'd love to visit it's hard to choose. :"CC And thanks for the suggestion, lol <3
no subject
I was so disappointed with Sweden's entry :"CCC I heard the rehearsals and I couldn't believe that guy could call himself a singer;;; A pretty face he has, but sdfghj- :"C They sounded better at the live performance, but it's only because he had two other singers to cover up for him.
myjournalisfilledwithreallyoldstuffhaha;;; but thank you <3 I've sketched a few things, so I might finish and post them up here later. :D
And I'd love to see more of you then! <333

The "everyone haaaaates us!" of everyone but the winning country is one of the parts of the ESC that always amuses me the most.
Re: Comments from a REAL Norwegian! 8D
sadly...Azer von...*sight*
Re: Comments from a really dissapointed person
Ja.. her extra terrible singing in the end when she won was like a slap with a rotten fish to the face. And also laughable. I'll admit I'm a terrible sore loser, but come on. XDD
I'm curious what will happen next year... Europe, don't give up now!
Re: Comments from a really dissapointed person
NL is actually the real loser of this year. We got last in the semi-finals.. Poland too.. but Poland had more points. xD
It's just a bit weird to realise Shalali was received better than this entry. And.. I've walked away when she sang that song again. I wanted Iceland or Denmark to win.. then Italy because I didn't want Sweden to win. xD But alright.
Next year, Eurasiavision. >.>;
The TROS already said we're participating again. I'm wondering what we'll send next. c:
no subject
And yes, I agree. xD Every year I also tell myself not to get disappointed when my favourite songs usually end somewhere buried deep down in the list, but yeah. xD
That's just how ESC works. :3
no subject
I know! It's like masochism, only with sparkly glitter dresses and wind machines!
Re: Comments from a really dissapointed person
At some point I actually wanted Sweden to win, simply for being an actual European country in freaking Europe. XDD hahaha
Gosh I'm wondering the same, I and I'm seriously keeping my fingers crossed we'll send something better next, and no more shalalies..
Re: I feel your dissapointment. Let us crowd in the looser corner
I was dissapointed in who the UK voted for along with who Norway gave points to.
screw that..I was dissapointed in almost all the points given Bl
there where so many songs and singers so much better - it's reather unfair. Although, that beeing said, I'm GLAD Ireland didn't win
Jedward...ewww
Let's hope the show will be entertaining...I'm sorry to say, but those German presenters where dull :(
Re:
You'll hate me for hoping they would win over Sweden and Azerbaijan then XDDD I was desperate okay :"C But I still didn't vote on them- I blame the judges. :"T
The German presenters were.. awkward XDD there was lots of cheering in my house when they pretended to hurt each other (And we were in love with that guy who copied Paul the octopus to tell the voting results- ohhh the burn) I like Germany, and Germans xDD but I couldn't help myself haha
We are just sore losers pfft-Re:
pppft, I don't hate on anyone XD I just grumble some cursewords then get on with life :D
Eurovision is just such a joke, I don't take it that seriously. (but I do feel a lot of glee when Norway wins <.< )
oh gods yes - the paul the octupus reference was actually quite good - but for the most part they really wheren't that funny <.<
poor Germans...I was hoping they could show everyone they do have a good sense of humour, but it kinda backfired.
*shotsohard*
