Help! I want to make a Hetalia Video as a School Project!

Hello! Well, I need everyone's help (if you can help). I am a high school student, and for one of my classes I am supposed to do a project. Well, I want to make a video containing Hetalia Goodness! Hetalia is entertaining and informative (especially the Japanese culture). Since we have to take history and most of students fall asleep in that class the moment the bell rings, so I thought I should introduce Hetalia to them. The problem is that most of the students in my class do not watch anime and Hetalia may not seem interesting to them because of that...but since anything that is funny is appealing (and Hetalia is hilarious) I think they might appreciate Hetalia (even though most of it is in Japanese). So. I am asking for you to tell me the funniest episodes or snippets you know (keep it to the school standard, which means no naked France or or...France molesting England...or anything with France, really xDD). Since most of students are studying American history, anything (funny) related to that would be awesome. But since all of the students have studied World History last year, anything (funny) will do. In addition, I was wondering what kind of a video would be a good idea? Should it have sections introducing the characters in the video (before the funny scene) or just a compilation without intros or anything special? Also, maybe someone around here has done a project like this and can show me examples?
Because Hetalia has rekindled my love for history, I would like to show it to others, and maybe it could help others to be interested in that subject as well, which, in turn, can raise global awareness for cultures (in some people at least. Like me...I closely study the French now xPPP). I look forward to reading your suggestions!

Everybody who suggested things, thank you very much! It was a lot of help. My focus has changed a bit though. Instead of "Gaiz, watch Hetalia because it's hilarious", I will show accurate, funny, and unoffensive clips that would show the events we learned about in an anime-esque way. I would also mention that the anime/manga does have inaccuracies (to those who might be interested in continuing on to watching/reading Hetalia). And I will definitely show it to my teachers first (for approval). Again, thank you very much for helping me!

Well could you use the parts about Japan and America? Or possibly the part where he finds Tony's space ship? (I don't know any of the ep numbers but I think wiki might have episode summery lists or something.)

I would say the part with Rome but... that's well... (it falls under the France catigory) Except the part where Germany gives his history.

I don't really know, but those would probably be a place to start. (You should totally have Prussia in there for A) Making it awesome and B) Telling people about it.... or heck! Even Sealand! XD)

Though everyone might not like Hetalia, it means they don't have to do any work so I think they'll take what they can get. Make sure you approve this by your teacher to make sure it's okay by them and that they find that it relates to history. Before you present the video, I think you should give character introductions (for the characters that appear in the video you choose) and talk about the stereotypes they present. If you wanna use the dubbed version, then that should be easier for them, but if you use Japanese subs, tell them before hand so they know they have to look at the bottom of the screen. After the video(s) end, make sure to note the important events and how it compares to actual history. Good luck~

Episodes I suggest (though most deal with European history and WWII):
- America Cleaning Out the Storage (when America cleans out the closet and remembers his past). There's one subbing that has America saying "the British are coming" at the end when England is coming.
- Hetalia Episode 39 and 40 (where England and France fight over America, which I think is an adorable episode btw~)
- The very first episode would be a good way to introduce the characters but it goes so fast it's hard to remember who is who. I remember watching it the first time and being confused so much I had to re-watch it many times to get it.
- Chibitalia Series (there's a link for just the Chibitalia clips altogether if that makes things easier).
- Hetalia World Series Episode 30 (The G8 meeting might be something funny to watch and understand which countries are involved in the G8)
- Hetalia Episode 31 (where the Axis find out each countries Christmas tradition).
- And just for fun, include the episode where Sealand is introduced. Just for everyone to know he's a little boy in a blue sailor outfit.

Honestly? This proooobably isn't a good idea. Even disregarding arguments about whether people would be offended or if Hetalia is suitable for class, I see one glaring issue with this: copyright. You don't legally have the rights to use Hetalia, even if you use the DVDs. That's more likely to fly than bringing in fansubs, though. I don't know how much your school cracks down on copyright, but fansubs technically are illegal to even create and share privately, let alone show at school. This does vary from school to school how seriously this is taken, but I have heard of high school and college anime clubs being barred from showing fansubs. Just a thought.

Yea some of the episodes have France in them, but he’s not being a pervert or anything.

I think this is a cute idea, but I don't think it'd be the best one to go through with. Not everyone likes anime, like you said, nor do most people want to be bothered reading subtitles, not to mention Hetalia isn't historically accurate and it could offend quite a few people if taken the wrong way. It might be something to make a verbal suggestion about instead of showing episodes in class. Or perhaps you could make your project about the portrayal of personifications of countries throughout history [which has happened way before Hetalia] and research that, building up to a small clip from Hetalia or something.

I totally suggest you to have Prussia in it (think most Americans don't know about it...)
Then the storage cleaning thing, G8, Germany finding Italy in the tomato box...
But ask your teacher first if it's okay to use Hetalia it would be bad if he/she is offended by it...

Though, I do agree with what some other people are saying. Check with your teacher to make sure using this is okay, first. Who knows. It really could go either way. With my class--anime clueless--it worked out well. Maybe we got lucky, I dunno. But best of luck with whatever you do.

Simple, there's a thing called "Fair Use" which allows copyrighted material to be used in an educational manner. After all, aren't ALL reports you do in school using copyrighted material, including quotes from encyclopedias and history books?

That said, I would actually recommend the dub be used instead of subs, whenever possible, since most students unaquainted with anime might not be able to read fast enough. Though you'd have to watch first to make sure it's ok since the dub added a few more jokes that "cross the line."

A disclaimer can easily be said at the beginning that it's not completely accurate, but it can be focused on as something akin to political cartoons, and it does have enough general facts that get one started in the right direction.

A point can be made about how it can serve to make one interested in the events enough to look up more information themselves. That's what it's done for a lot of people after all, myself included.

It would be far different than a typical project, thus more memorable, and creativity often nets excellent response IF it's done right. Just as much reason to go for it as not to.

i think have to agree with the people who say that it's not accurate enough.
it's nothing which can be used for real history projects. some facts in the anime are even plain wrong.

and history is a serious topic. especially WW1 and WW2. many people suffered and died.
i don't know if it's a good idea to teach people about the tragedy of history with funny little clips.

the first contact with such world changing, sensible and important history should be serious, non offending and accurate. (germany meeting italy in a forest in a wooden box..yea..very funny, at the same time he's preparing to kill jews in the most brutal and disgusting way...not funny, huh??)

i think you can always show hetalia afterwards. but first there should be facts and then you can make jokes about them in case you still feel like making jokes about hearing the facts about WW1 and WW2.

Whether or not this is appropriate for school, I just gotta say that one of the funniest moments in Hetalia for me, personally, is the "German Simulator" segment XD I just...words cannot describe...the love and hilarity I have for that episode xDDD

That's...really not the same thing here lol re; fair use, but usually if it's an actual DVD being shown in a classroom it's okay. The reason I brought this up, though, is that it sounds like OP plans on using the fansubs. Depending on their school, that may not go over well. They probably won't get in trouble for it, but they could be told they can't show it and it'd go to waste.

The whole class may find it utterly boring. Also some people get very offended by Hetalia. Imagine if OP pissed off the teacher with it.

Also it's kind of a misconception that Hetalia is educational. Hetalia itself really isn't educational at all. What it does is it mentions historical events and ties them into the hilarity, which makes some viewers want to go look up the actual event on their own. Thing is, something that isn't inherently educational doesn't really have a place in class, and not everyone ends up actually looking into things because Hetalia anyway.

Honestly, the fact that someone upthread confused the War of Austrian Succession with the Seven Years War kind of proves my point re; Hetalia not actually being educational at all.

Not the best idea honestly. Hetalia isn't accurate enough to be shown in a school presentation and most people will probably ridicule you and your project for showing it. Not trying to be mean or anything but there are other ways to make your presenation more appealing. If you're dying to use a cartoon, I think Histeria! would be a better bet since it uses catchy songs and is more accurate..I believe.

True, not all of Hetalia is historically accurate, but there are some parts that can definitely be used to supplement. The one section that's really sticking out to me right now is the beginning of episode...40, I believe it is? When France and England are fighting over America.

I agree with most of the others. Hetalia isn't historically accurate at all. Especially with legend! In Hetalia World Series Episode 44, when Poland was talking about the legend of the Wawel Dragon-- Poland/Himaruya had it all wrong!! It was not a prince who defeated the dragon but a shoemaker! The shoemaker defeated the dragon like this: The shoemaker used his brain, he created a fake sheep, he poured some hot sauce or anything else in it that is hot. While the dragon was sleeping he put it in front of the cave, dragon woke up, ate it, his tongue was beginning to burn, drank from the Wisła River, and exploded. This is from a Pole myself who knows about the legend, but it's true that Kraków sells Wawel Dragon plushies all over town and we actually do have a dragon statue that breathes fire in front of the cave, lol.

But here is an example of what Himaruya puts in his comics may also be wrong. You will have to do careful research about historical/legendary events if you want to use it in a project. But I still tell you please don't do this project with Hetalia as your source, there are other appealing ways. But if you still plan to do it, just make sure to do more research so you can make sure what you're adding is for real and ask your teacher his/her opinion with this. It's all up to you now.

I understand that. I am rethinking my approach. I think, instead of using for "educational" purposes, I will just use scenes (which are not going to offend anyone) that I (along with other Hetalia fans in my classroom) consider hilarious or accurate. People have different opinions, some may not like and some may not, so I will take my chances.

I suppose you could counter any confusion that will happen by giving a detailed explanation of the historical event and the countries shown in the clip. But to be honest the only way I could see the clips being involved in a presentable, respectable project is if you have it be about political cartoons or personifications as representations in political art or cartoons as opposed to being /about/ Hetalia, with the anime itself being a very minor, but memorable, part of the presentation.

You see it often in fine and political art. Usually a nation would be represented by a woman, but leaders could also represent a nation in general as well as men like Uncle Sam. I'd be extremely surprised if you haven't seen an example for yourself before now.

You could research these characterizations and discuss how they're usually used--to make statements about the country, positive or negative? Who was the artist? Where was the artist from and how would that effect their view on how the personifications were portrayed? And then at the end you could pull out some modern examples including a clip or two from Hetalia.
