One is called, literally, erasing the past day, and the other is called the new year day. Both days are equally important. There is actually a very famous legend if you want to know.

Chinese New Year Legend

[identity profile] xxmapsyrxx.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
This legend is quite long, and i apologize for my English in advance.

So...once upon a time there was a monster called Year, annually it would show up in villages to eat people while destroying things. A brave young man one time tried to tackle the monster, but was seriously mauled. The monster comes at the evening of a fixed date and leaves just before sunrise of the next day. All people can do is escape to a nearby mountain and wait out for there isn’t anyone who knows how to get rid of the monster.

One year, an old man comes along and tells everyone to put up red stuff and light fire crackers to scare the monster. No one believed him because no one was ever successful at getting rid of the monster in the past. So when the monster is about to show up again, everyone went into the mountain, except for an old lady. She did what the old man said, decorated everywhere with red stuff.

The monster came as usual, but was scared to go near anything let alone the old lady. The old lady quickly figured out that the monster is scared of anything red, so at least some parts of the old man's methods are working. So the old lady proceeded to light fire cracks, and the sound simply scared away the monster Year, and the monster ran out of the village and started walking around village for it was very scared of the sound. The old lady ran to the nearby mountain and told everyone that the monster is not going into the village. Everyone came out and saw that the monster was only walking around the village instead of in the village, realizing that there is a way to get rid of the monster.

In order to get rid of the monster once for all, everyone came out with firecrackers and red clothes to wear, the monster was so scared of all this stuff, it even ran away from the village. Everyone in the village rejoiced. So people of this village went around and told everyone that this is the way to get rid of this monster. To make sure that the monster will never come back, everyone proceeded to dress red and light fire cracks every year.

Everyone named the day the monster come as the day of erasing the past, and the day the monster leaves as the New Year, because the last day of the “old” Year was marked by the possible arrival of the previous monster Year, the next day is marked by the possible arrival of the “new” Year. Therefore, in Chinese New Year, it is widely regarded as two days.

There are so many traditions during the Chinese New Year, I won’t go into that. I guess everyone seems to know red is lucky in Chinese traditions, but don’t know why, and this is why. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my babbling. This is why I enjoy Hetalia, because you always learn things.
