[FANFIC] Independence

Characters/Pairings: Denmark/Norway, slightly Sweden/Norway

Rating: PG-13?

Summary: The year is 1814. Norway wishes to become independent, but will Denmark be able to let go?

Warning (sort of): It's hard to write something advanced when I don't know much about the characters' personalities so it's not very deep... but at least I tried^^'

Independence

Norway could feel his hands tremble slightly as he clutched the large book he was holding closer to his chest. He was standing in front of Denmark's office. Mere seconds ago he was ready to barge in and claim his rights, but now he found himself hesitating. He wanted to be independent more than anything, yet the thought of standing alone suddenly seemed a whole lot scarier when it was so close to become true. Besides, could he really expect Denmark to let him go without a fight? He shook his head. This was not the time to back down. After spending so many hours writing the masterpiece he now held in his arms, he could not give up. His eyes were once again filled with determination as he roughly pushed the door open.

"Denmark! I-" he began, but was cut off as the Dane captured him in a tight embrace.

"Ah, Norway! My cute little spouse!" Denmark exclaimed and eagerly leaned forward to brush his lips against the Norwegian's "Give me a kiss~"

Norway's cheeks turned bright red while he desperately tried to free himself from the strong grip. "Let go!" he hissed "I'm not here to play. I just want to show you how independent I've gotten!" Denmark's smile was quickly replaced by a frown "That again?" he asked, sighing in disappointment, however his attitude soon changed as a smirk found is way onto his lips "can't you just admit you like being under me?"

The blatant innuendo made Norway's cheeks turn even redder. Of course he didn't enjoy being treated as Denmark's personal love-toy. Who would? Yet being reminded of all the heated nights they had shared sent an almost pleasant shiver down his spine. Even if he'd never say it out loud he knew he was going to miss being that close to the Dane. "No, I don't like it!" he answered upon noticing how Denmark's smirk turned even wider "In fact I hate it! That's why I want to break the union!". He promptly opened the book he had been carrying along and slammed it down on the desk "Look. I'm writing my own constitution! I'm done with following your rules!". He paused to catch his breath. His heart was beating hard in both fear and excitement. It had been a while since he last had dared to oppose Denmark. He stiffened a bit when he could feel said nation leaning over his shoulder. A hand absentmindedly caressed his back while the other came to rest on the page in front of them. "I guess I can let you have your own constitution" the Dane commenced. The tone in his voice sounded somewhat amused "but why are you writing it in Danish?"

The Norwegian's eyes went wide in disbelief. How was that possible? This was the only written language he knew. "It's... It's n-not Danish" he stuttered "It's in Norwegian."

"Some words are changed," Denmark noted "but it's definitely Danish"

Norway yelped. His language. His beautiful written-language. How could he not remember? Tears began trailing down his, still reddened, cheeks. "Damn you, Denmark" he sobbed "This is all your fault! You forced me to use your language for so long I don't even know how to write in my own any more". Seeking some sort of comfort he buried his face in Denmark's shirt and continued to cry. "I hate you!" he bawled and dug his fingers into the soft fabric until he could feel the warmth of the skin beneath. He was about to pull away when a pair of strong arms gently wrapped themselves around him. "Don't leave me, sweetheart" Denmark whispered "you don't need that silly language of yours. Just keep using mine"

"I hate your language" came the muffled reply " When you speak it sounds like you've got a potato stuck in your throat."

"W-what!?"

Norway was half expecting to receive a beating when Denmark stepped back and glared at him. "you little..." the Dane growled before turning his back at him "Fine! It's over! You can have your damn independence!". Norway's pride could not compare to the horrible guilt he felt when he realized how badly he had hurt the other man. "But Denmark! I'm sorry!" he blurted out "I didn't mean to-"

"I SAID IT'S OVER!"

Later that night, Sweden's peaceful sleep was interrupted by a loud banging noise outside his door. He groaned and pulled the sheets over his head, but soon figured he had no choice but to leave his warm and comfy bed behind to get rid of the annoyance. He opened the door and narrowed his eyes in confusion when he found a teary-eyed Norway staring back at him. So vulnerable. The sight made his heart ache. Something about that seemingly fragile figure and those innocent blue eyes made him think of the boy he had once been proud to call his wife.

"Sverige" the younger man whimpered "It’s so scary to sleep all alone. Can I sleep with you?"

Sweden nodded.

"Sure."

A/N:

1814 is a very important year in Norwegian history. Our constitution was written, we broke the union with Denmark and were independent for a short period of time before we somehow ended up being under Sweden in stead *sigh* XD

The thing Norway says about Denmark speaking like he has a potato stuck in his throat is actually the way Norwegians describe how Danish sounds like... but it's just a silly expression, not meant to be rude^^'
