I watched Champloo so maybe I shouldn't say for fear of spoiling for people but based on the original characters' relationship, it could either be Kiku is somehow getting his hair done by Yao or Kiku poked his head in when Yao was messing with his own hair haha.

Gyah mirrors I have the same phobia, I can't look at them at night unless the lights are on and I refuse to have one in my room o_o
