Russia was big like a bear, with deceptively soft-looking blonde-brown hair and soft eyes that always seemed as though they were looking past you, or inwardly at something pleasant and warm. Knowing Russia, he was probably really thinking of something evil, like kicking someone down a set of stairs. Lithuania always kept as much distance between himself and Russia as possible, particularly when the other nation was looking this mellow.

On the other hand, Russia was in his happiest mood during the summer Russian "White Nights." He'd go down to Leningrad then, and for a time it would seem like the sun never set, and the sky would glow something pearly and clear blue. People would stay up to all hours just to enjoy the sunlight while it was still around.

Russia, of course, hauled Lithuania along like his personal lackey. Russia wandered through the city streets, humming his nation's patriotic song, his ever-present scarf trailing after him. Lithuania trailed close by as well. At one in the morning, Lithuania was exhausted and unhappy, thinking of all the nations he would have rather been with at that moment than this fright called Russia, when a pair of large hands suddenly came to rest on his shoulders, and Lithuania could have died right then and there from a heart-attack.

Of course, it was only Russia.

"Look," Russia said.

Without much choice, Lithuania looked up at the sky and the sun on the rooftops, gilded like watered gold. And he couldn't help it. His eyes widened a little, and he stopped trembling.

Because it was so beautiful.
