Chapter 38

After snacking on eggs, Monika rounded everyone up, said their good-byes, and finally headed towards the town. It wasn’t a long trip, about an hour and a half walk.

“Finally! I missed this place.” Monika pointed ahead. “See this fence? We spent the first few months setting it up so you have to enter the town through here. We also made sure to add barbed wire to the most vulnerable areas.”

“STOP RIGHT NOW!” A man in camos shouted as he stood before the entrance. He aimed his rifle at them.

Monika walked to the front of the group. “Vash. Vash, it’s us! Put your gun down! Why are you so surprised we’re here? Didn’t my brother tell you we were on our way back?”

“No.”

“I swear I am going to hit him. Gilbert had one job and he couldn’t do that!”

A little blonde girl walked over to Vash’s side. “Brother… That’s a polar bear over there.”

“Yes. I see it, Lily. Get back, I’m busy at the moment!”

“What’s the matter, brother? They’re our friends.”

“It doesn’t matter, Lily!” Vash scolded.

“Why not?”

“Didn’t I teach you anything? I told you that you can’t just let anyone in! Even if you know the person. How do we know they’re not infected? It happens in every zombie movie! There’s always someone that gets infected and ends up screwing everyone else over!”

“It’s true!” Amelia chimed in.

“Vash! No one here is infected,” Monika insisted.

“What about that guy?” Vash pointed to Feliks in his wagon.

“He’s just lazy. The only person with an injury with us is Nikolai over there. He only has a banged-up knee. No one has been bit. I traveled with this group for a few days and if anyone was infected, they would have showed symptoms by now. Don’t you think if I knew someone has been infected that I would have immediately handled the situation myself?”

“You have a point.” Vash lowered his rifle. “Fine!”

As the others carefully made their way past him, Amelia stopped to admire his rifle.

“What are you doing?”

“I like it!” Amelia smiled at him. “Would you like to see mine?”

“Your… what?”

Maddie slipped off of Kumajiro and grabbed Amelia’s arm. “Later, Amelia.”

“Look at all the animals!” Lily giggled. “I think I’ll ask if I could get a ride on that polar bear.”

Vash questioned himself on whether he made the right decision letting them in.

Chapter 39

Against her brother’s wishes, Lily decided to hang out with the new group for a while to get to know them… and to ride the polar bear. After asking Maddie’s permission, she he happily sat on top of Kumajiro.

Lily led them to a large, grassy field. “You can leave your stuff here. No one will take them because they would have to get past my brother first. This area is for our animals. Over there, you can see my big brother’s goats! Aren’t they cute?”

“Anything happen while we were gone, Miss Lily?” Kiku asked.

“We were planning to form a search party if you didn’t return in about 5 days. They were hoping to get the electric cars working by then.”

“Let’s go tell everyone we’re back then!” Feliciano grabbed Monika’s arms. “Come on!”

They walked down a paved street past a few mansions before stopping in front of a huge stone mansion with a balcony above the door. Someone decorated the front yard with medieval banners and streamers.

“Gilbert! What the hell are you doing?” Monika fumed.

“Welcome home, Princess Monika!” Gilbert stepped out on the balcony wearing an unfinished purple medieval king outfit. His crown of rhinestones looked like it was from a costume store. “Dear loyal subjects, I welcome you to the Kingdom of Prussiaisawesomestan!”

“Don’t listen to him. No one agreed on that name.”

“I am King Gilbert the First! You may also call me King Gilbert the Awesome.” Gilbert paced around the balcony. “Since this is my kingdom, you all will obey my laws! I don’t have a ton of laws at the moment but I will post them once I think of enough. But for now my kingdom forbids murder, thief, and… uh… the usual stuff! Since I am such a benevolent king, pot is legal in my kingdom! Thank you! Thank you! Yes, I know that I rule! Literally!”

“Gilbert, you idiot! I told you to tell everyone we were coming! Vash nearly shot us!”

“I’m sorry, dear princess! I was going to but the decorations took longer than I thought they would to put up. A princess should not arrive to her kingdom without decorations! Because of that, I have postponed the party celebrating your return for a few days.”

“I don’t want a party thrown in my honor! We have to…”

“Sister,” Gilbert interrupted, “Your doggies missed you! And there’s beer!”

“Fine! We’ll discuss this inside!” Monika turned to Kiku and Feliciano. “Can you show them around, please?”

Feliciano gave her a salute. “Sure thing, Princess Monika! Anything you say!”

“Don’t call me that!”

“So that’s the “self-proclaimed” king,” Arthur mumbled to himself.

“He can do what he likes.” Chun-Yan shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll own this town in about 6 months anyway.”

Chapter 40

The business section of the town was where most of the survivors spent their time working during the day. Chun-Yan eyed greedily at the many potential candidates to work on her farm as they passed by. She guessed there were around fifty people that lived here so she was sure no one would care if she took about a dozen. Maybe a few more.

“Eduard,” Chun-Yan ordered, “Come with me. We’re going to do some… observing.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Eduard wanted to ask her what they were exactly observing but he knew better than to question her.

“Hey!” Ollo yelled from inside of Eduard’s backpack. “You’re supposed to be fixing me, you bastard!”

“I will! Later!”

“Being stuck in here sucks!”

“I understand but please do not make a scene!” Eduard followed Chun-Yan into a nearby building while Ollo continued to whine.

“Well this is it!” Feliciano clapped to break the awkward silence. “I can’t wait to introduce you to everyone! Everyone is so nice once you get to know them! Especially my sister.” Feliciano pointed to the man wearing a white doctor’s lab coat. “Oh! That guy over there is one of the town’s doctors!” He called out and waved. “Hello, Dr. Sadik!”

“Hey there, Feliciano!” Dr. Sadik waved back. “So you’re back, huh? Did you get to see the farm?”

“No. There was… car trouble.”

Dr. Sadik laughed. “Car trouble? Right. I’m sure Monika put you through the wringer for that!”

“Yeah… she did. But we found a ton of new friends and one of them was the owner of that farm! So everything turned out for the best!”

“That’s wonderful! Well, you all will be staying with us at the emergency center tonight. It’s just a precaution.” Dr. Sadik’s eyes suddenly darted between Nikolai and Feliks. “Uh…”

“There is nothing wrong with Mr. Feliks,” Toris blurted out, “He likes to ride in his wagon. Mr. Nikolai has a hurt knee though.”

Nikolai gave Toris a dirty look and stumbled backwards. “No! I am fine! Nothing is wrong!”

“Uh huh.” Dr. Sadik chuckled as he walked towards Nikolai. “Come on, boy! I’ll take you to…”

“Stay away from me!” He swiftly for his blade… and remembered that Blonde Bimbo #2 still had it. He struggled as the much stronger Dr. Sadik hoisted him over his shoulder. “Put me down! I do not need any help!”

“Relax, boy! I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Sister! Sister, help!” Nikolai reached towards Anya.

“Look at this guy!” Dr. Sadik joked as he maintained his grip, “He looks like he came out of a vampire romance novel but he acts like such a big baby!”

“Sister! Please!”

“Just go with the man, brother.” Anya stated flatly as she did not want to get invovled. “We will all be there with you shortly.”

“But sister!” Nikolai begged as Dr. Sadik took him away.

“Do not worry! I will go with you, Mr. Nikolai!” Toris volunteered as he chased after them.

Anya was getting real tired of Toris lately. He should be paying more attention to her. But what can she do? She gripped the shovel tightly in her hands then slowly followed them.

As everyone else watched them go, Feliks motioned Amelia to come over to him. “Can you please be a hero and pull my wagon for me?”

“Sure!” Amelia enthusiastically grabbed the handle. “Wanna go fast?”

“Not too fast. Thank you.”
