[scanlation] Vol. 5, Track 10 - I, like, wanna be free!

Long time no see! I'm here with a translated strip from volume five. I did the translating and typesetting, but special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aomori and [livejournal.com profile] jaywalkings for the raw scans and [livejournal.com profile] nameru_ja_nai for cleaning! Enjoy!

NOTES
1. It depends on the household, but in East and Southeast Asia, people usually leave their shoes by the door. I guess China's slippers clutter up the doorway once in a while!
2. Yuan Kai is a poet from Shanghai. He lived during the Ming dynasty. If you can read Chinese, here's a collection of some of his poems in simplified Chinese!
3. Yellow can also mean...
4. hao (好) means "good" or "OK" in Chinese.
5. Yes, Taiwan really says kawaii.

I didn't translate the blurbs on the side because I got lazy, but [livejournal.com profile] x_regg did right here!
I'll probably do the profiles for the Asian countries next.

Awesome-ness~<3

Thanks so so much for translating - mind if I post these on Tumblr with credit, or d'you already have that taken care of?

[identity profile] lksugui.livejournal.com 2012-08-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for this! <3

I might be wrong sice my Japanese is big fail, but I think what Macao is saying on p. 88, first panel is "you should let your beloved children go on a journey". In other words, "if you love somebody, set them free".

I don't trust my japanese well enough to do a translation, but here's a summary/rough translation :D

Treating
In the old times, the concept of 'splitting the bill' didn't exist in the Hong Kong and Guang dong area. Since Chinese people really value 'face', it was normal that the eldest person or the leader will pay the whole cost. Even employees expect to be treated, starting with "XX restaurant is really good~". Even now in business or celebratory occasions it's normal that the host pays for the whole cost. Friends that are around the same age mostly do "AA system" (Going Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_Dutch)). It's the same in China.

Lai See
Instead of doing it by age, Lai see is given by married people to unmarried people. The packet usually have a red background with gold writing, and are given away in large numbers. I'm not sure about the rest of the blurbs.. Basically during CNY people have loads of lai see packets ready and distribute them when they see someone they know. Most kids love this period because it's really seen as a source of extra money :P Lai see is also given during celebratory events, eg birthdays, engagements, return gifts etc. They're also never given to someone older than you, even if they're not married.

Villian hitting
I'm only picking up on the kanji (yay for being Chinese!), but the whole thing is about Villain hitting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villain_hitting). The grannies basically 'curse' anyone who may be in your way to fortune by burning talisman and hitting a human-shaped paper with slippers so as to 'curse' them. It's stereotypically used in dramas by mistresses to 'curse' the wife or first wife of their husband. An example here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbwlgvSYVRA)

The second part is just saying in english Cinderella's shoes are known as glass slippers (in Japanese it's translated as glass shoes), the same as what the old grannies use.

Wasabi
A lot of Hong Kongers really love sushi, and use an insane amount of wasabi when eating sushi. It's to the level of covering the small dish with wasabi (A guess, but from my personal wasabi preference, it's not off). Unlike people from Sichuan, it seems like people from Guang dong normally dislike spicy food but wasabi is an exception.

pretty cool is not enough yana he is the coolest ok hong kong more like hong kool

ALSO UM I

DON'T WANT TO BURST EVERYONE'S BUBBLE OR ANYTHING but I.. don't think that's Vietnam on page 89- for one, she has a ribbon in her hair whereas Vietnam just has a simple hairtie I think??

and me and a friend translated the text above her and HK and it says something like sneaky whispering; it makes sense for HK to be secretly asking one of his people to give China a discount on what he's getting, after what HK's saying about treating him in the next panel...

[identity profile] jaywalkings.livejournal.com 2012-08-04 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
oops sorry that was my fault u3u I JUST... ASSUMED TOO.. but then afterwards was like but wait this doesn't.. make any sense what's vietnam doing in the middle of all this chineseness.... and now with your translation I'm pretty sure it isn't orz

s-sorry for the trouble ;o;!

Whoever who did translated, thank you so much.

Oh China, you shouldn't touch and censor his stuff, no wonder why Hong Kong is pissed off and wants to move out. And that's reflects almost exactly of what happens in reality in Hong Kong.

Anyway, I really enjoy reading and laughing a lot, and that's the good one! <3

This story was so cute! I know that all of these are political anecdotes, but Hong Kong's frustrations mirrors events I've seen happen in my own family which makes this all the more amusing to me. And China... Oh China. He's so cute and motherly! He just doesn't want another baby bird to leave the nest. XD

Thank you so much for translating this :D
